Comments: I was a jet engine mechanic attached to VS-37. Ranger was my
first cruise. We visted Mombasa, Phattya Beach, Hong Kong, Subic Bay. Went TAD
to the aft galley, what a treat! Also did numerous REFTRAs on board her through
the early 80's. I have quit a few pictures, I'll look through them and send some
your way. Your picture of the ship in Bremerton isn't dated, is Ranger still
afloat or has she been reduced to razor blades? Will write soon, Chuck-Class of

Comments: I often think of the seemingly endless days at sea, launching
aircraft and recovering for hours. The people with whom we worked were friends
and sometimes adversaries but always sharing the time and experiences which we
now look back upon with a degree of fondness. I would love to gather the crew
together and quietly talk about how the experience of the Ranger has impacted
each one of us. My memories are clouded by time, but I would not trade them for
anything.

Comments: I got assigned to S-7 Div. in June 1974 as a DP3. Shortly
thereafter I made DP2. Great bunch of guys! We operated the computers on the 2nd
deck (amidships). In March 1975 I went TAD to the Master-At-Arms Dept. (wasn't a
rating yet). Served under the MCPOC. TAD assignment was 6 months - but I was
allowed to extend it until my EAOS (11/18/1975) thanks to a GREAT officer in
Supply Dept. CMDR Kalafut! Those were some great times. Discharged from Ranger
in Coronado, CA. I missed the change of homeports in June 1975 because I took 35
days leave and drove my 1974 VW across the USA. I am still driving the car I had
back then AND more importantly I am still working in Data Processing now for 30+
years. Plan to retire in 5 years or so. TOP GUN BAR NONE!!! Was it just me or
did Capt. A.E. Hill sound like John Wayne over the 1MC? "Good Morning Top

Comments: I worked in V-4 division fueling planes. I was a little late to
be a plank owner. The Ranger was never one of my big concerns after I got out of
the navy, until I saw her in Bremerton,Wa. I now am a member of the reunion
association, the museum foundation, and the tailhook association.Went to the last
two reunions and had a ball. Even met another shipmate that fueled planes with
me.

Comments: This site is the greatest honor anyone could bestow upon our
resting Top Gun. John, you ARE a Top Gun. As we get closer to the make/break
time for her to become a museum, where once again, we may freely visit her and
walk her decks, all Rangermen, ship's company or airwing, should help to become
museum plank owners. Every little bit helps, believe it! It has been an honor
for me to know John Guy and Ken Estes, people who are really 'doing the job' of
keeping RangerBoat alive and kicking. And with the Ronny Ray Gun CVN76 about to
push water, knowing Ranger's anchors and chains are aboard that mighty warship,
lets us know Ranger is still serving our country. Lets all help out, Rangermen,
go to the museum site and sign up to once again be part of a very special crew,
regardless of conflict or generation. She was very special. TOP GUN BAR NONE

Did you serve aboard the USS Ranger,if so when?: 1982 - Member of VAQ-137
"Rooks" out of Whidbey Island, WA
Comments: My first Cruise! Caught up with Squadron and Ranger in the
North Arabian Sea in July 1982. I was in VAQ-137 "Rooks" but TAD to
AIMD workcenter 610. Best friend on the ship was Vince Mosley of VF-1 "Wolfpack"
Vince and I created a little strife in the shop just by being friends. He was
black, I was white and our supervisors had a problem with it. We were even told
not to hang out together on the ship. You can imagine the fear in our
supervisors' hearts when a Commander from the ship called to talk to us. You
see, for Ranger's 25 anniversary celebration Vince and I made the suggestion
(via "ranger Mouse") that Master Chief of the Command, Master Chief
Boswains Mate Hobbs (Joined the Navy Nov. 1941) start the day by blowing the
whisles. The call was to pass on a message from the Master Chief on how
flattered he was to be thought of. How about that? A Commander acting as an
errand boy for a Master Chief. We didn't tell our supervisors what the call was
about. Needless to say nothing else was said to Vince and I. Perth, Australia -
Worlds best Port of Call! WOG Day - September 19, 1982: Longitude 00, Latitude
119E. Proud I went through it, Glad I never have to again!

Comments: Dear John R. Guy, I have been the recipient of many of your
wonderful pictures via email from a friend, Wayne Grabbe who served on the
Ranger. I am most fortunate to know such a man. I have always had a soft spot in
my heart for the Navy as my father served on the USS Detroit during WWII. Your
website is awesome. I have not been able to see everything you have as yet but I
just spent some time viewing all your photographs of the Ranger and they were
spectacular. Thank you for all your efforts to bring this history to people. I
am sure, I will get to view everything eventually. I am a homemaker so I don't
have a lot of spare time but I will always take time out for the Navy! With
sincere thanks for all you do. Ida Eichman

Comments: Hey, sorry about that, these old fingers hit the wrong button
on that last entry. A couple more items that may be of interest regarding the
Ranger Lone Ranger. Two other Lone Rangers have checked in. There were only 7
before the program was ended in 1976. Anyone else who portrayed the character is
invited to join this group. The themesong was kept until her decommissioning in
1993. I researched through the State of Wyoming and have the original paperwork
for the TOP GUN brand that you see on the horse and is occasionally shown in
various places. TG/O (TOP GUN BAR NONE) is a registered brand, however it is out
of date and has been officially discontinued by the state of Wyoming. But we do
have claims to it and I doubt anyone else will use it. This information, as well
as anything to do with the Lone Ranger program, will be archived and eventually
put together as a display on board Ranger. If any of you have photos or stories
of anything to do with the Ranger Lone Ranger, please pass them on, full credit
will be given to all who submit items. The reason that we must now use 'Ranger'
Lone Ranger is that the name Lone Ranger is an 'owned' name, by Family Books
Inc. There is a feature film in the works, a new official Lone Ranger has been
identified, so the use of the name "Lone Ranger" is not allowed by
copywrite. We will honor that copywrite and address the character on board
Ranger as the "Ranger Lone Ranger", or RLR for short. Thanks alot
everyone.

from Ranger in July,1970. I was known (affectionately ???) as The Ol' Bos'n,
although I was Lt LDOT. I had a room mate who told everyone, who'd listen, the
following story. The Medical officer told the XO that there was a case of Beri
Beri on board. The XO said, "give it to Waits. He'll drink anything".
I attended Ranger's Decommissioning Ceremony at North Island, and during the
flyover, there wasn't a dry eye to be seen. How would I know? My eyes were so
full of tears, I couldn't see anything anyway.

was a good boat, blew her stack every now and then to let you know who was in
really charge. Most prominate memories, watching the U-2 take off and land while
we were off the coast of South America by the Equator in 1964, watching our
escort destroyers persuade a Russian Trawler, with more antennes than fish
nets,to leave the area while we were dead in the water for three days fighting a
boiler room fire. A lot of good sailors served on that boat. Good luck.

Did you serve aboard the USS Ranger,if so when?: 1981-1984
Comments: Started out in E-DIV, forward IC shop. Then went to OE-DIV TV
repair and KRAN TV. Went on 2 1/2 westpacs and Central American ops. Spent two
weeks in transit on Diego Garcia before being flown out to the ship on CH-46
helo. I'll never forget seeing Ranger for the first time and thinking "were
gonna land on that?". My first port of call was Pattaya Beach. After
waiting in the liberty line for about 5 hrs I finally got to shore, had to wade
the last 20' to the beach! Pattaya/Bankok was awesome, I was a young dumb
country boy in paradise. Would like to hear from any shipmates, recall old times
enjoyed aboard the Ranger.

Did you serve aboard the USS Ranger,if so when?: OP Div. (I.O.I.C.)
1965-1967
Comments: Ahoy Shipmates! I "come aboard" every once in awhile
to see if there are any shipmates that I recall. Spotted a entry from "airdale"
Dave Bridenbaugh. He commented that not too many of our generation appear to be
"computer literate". Not too many early 60's-Vietnan entries. Though I
have successfully connected with a score of my OP Division-types through this
medium...I tend to agree with him. So, not wanting to see Shipmate Dave feel
lonely I am joining him here to also state that Capt.Leo B. McCuddin was the
finest C.O. I ever served under. And, that those tender young years spent aboard
Ranger-boat were the most formative for later true adulthood. Lastly, I wish to
also exclaim that Shipmate Guy has done a 4.0 job with this Ranger-boat
web-site. Arigato! Adios, amigos! Wish us all luck in saving our noble
"home"...United States FIGHTING Ship, Ranger!

Comments: I have verry fond feelings for her that is where I was At for
the fire of #1 aux and when the reduction gear was tore up. I also was there for
her sea trials after refit to navy dist. fuel. I started my tour as a D.C. 3 and
finishd as a htfn. then I was discharged in S.D. after the war. I then wenton to
become a CAPT. un the merchant marine. Thanks to that ship and all that we went
through I know that I am a better CAPT. and I have better understanding of life.
Also I would like to say thank you for setting up this site. I did not know

Comments: I met the Ranger at Subic Bay in March of 1968. I remember
going to Korea right after with the Pueblo incident. After that the ship was in
the Tonkin gulf off the coast of Viet Nam. Quite the experience for a "kid
of 18" from a small town in the Midwest...

Did you serve aboard the USS Ranger,if so when?: 8/68 - 6/70
Comments: This is an awesome website - a great place to visit. My time on
the Ranger was the best two years of my life (prior to meeting my wife). Worked
the 68-69 cruise in the medical outpatient clinic and the 69-70 cruse in the
hospital ward. The Ranger had several special visitors while I was on board:
Billy Graham, Neil Armstrong, Bob Hope with a troupe of some great looking
women. Liberties at Pearl Harbor, Subic Bay, Yokusuka, Sasebo, and Hong Kong can
never be forgotten.

Comments: I was ACOMMO 1989-1991. Made most of the 89 cruise and the
entire Desert Storm Cruise in 91. Some of my best memories from the Navy are
from those years on RANGER. There is nothing like a common mission to pull an
entire crew together, and the Desert Storm conflict surely did that. RANGER's
crew was the best I served with in 21 years in the Navy. From the CO (Ernie
Christensen) on down to the deck plates, it was a real pleasure to be aboard the
TOP GUN of the Pacific and work with all those professionals. Hope the years
have been good to everyone, they have to me. Wishing everyone who served in
RANGER a wonderful "ALOHA".

Did you serve aboard the USS Ranger,if so when?: 71-72 to 73-74???? S7
division
Comments: Well, it has been over 30 years and I'm getting to that
stage.... Spent all afternoon going thru the over 1000 entries and saw No body
identifying themselves as being from S7! Very interesting to learn a bit more
about the history of Ranger. We also had a fire just as we reported to Yankee
Station, it was down below S7 Division #2MMR-auxiliary if I remember correctly.
No fatalities (and I'm sorry to hear about the later fire where there were. My
condolences to those of you involved) but the event did make me appreciate the
training, drilling, training, because we might not survived had we not had so
much training, drilling, training. Very much an influence on my life, even 'till
today. Would love to hear from S7 division folks from any date. Remember the
CRPI?

Comments: I was Radarman in OI Division. I made West Pac cruise's in 1966
and 1967/68. I have nothing but fond memories and often think of Leo B McCuddin,
my first skipper. I remember Captain McCuddin driving the liberty bus back from
liberty. I think it was in Yokosuka but time has clouded that a bit. I would
dearly love to wander the decks of Ranger one more time. The smell of CIC, the
chow hall and how can we forget gedunk. No one outside the Navy
brother/sisterhood knows what gedunk is. Best wishes to you all.

Comments: Iwas onboard the Ranger for two west pacs attached to va-113,
flying a-7 aircraft known as the stingers. Also saved a shipmates life prior to
pulling into Pearl Harbor, he walked in front on the intake on the A-7 which
started to injest the sailor I quickly pulled him out by his legs and got him
down to sickbay. My time onboard the Ranger was memoriable and enjoyable, would
like to get to Bremmington and walk the ship again. If anybody was on the cruise
when i saved the shipmate please get in touch, looking for shipmates.

Comments: I have so many memories of those two WESTPAC cruises. There's
not a day that goes by that I don't think of some event or someone that I worked
with.I remember January 1968 when we were ordered to proceed from the Tonkin
Gulf to the Sea of Japan right after the North Koreans captured the USS
Pueblo. In four days we went from hot, humid weather and 80 degree water
temperatures to bitter cold and snowy conditions with water temps just above
freezing. It was several days after we arrived before the switch from air
conditioning to heat took place in the ship. I remember hitting the rack and
piling every piece of clothing on top of me to try and keep warm. But when we
reached the Sea of Japan we were ready to go to war with North Korea. The
transition from fighting in Viet Nam and a preparing for a totally different war
in four days was a tremendous effort and accomplishment. I remember thinking
that if we did launch against North Korea that I hoped I wouldn't have to swim
in that water. We were at sea for 63 days, we flew every day under terrible
conditions, landed on a flight deck that was often coated with ice, and never
lost a plane. Were we happy to see Sasebo, Japan or what?! Wouldn't you know
that a year later almost to the day we were ordered back to the Sea of Japan
from the Gulf of Tonkin when the North Koreans shot down one of our EC-121's. I
have been associated with a lot of people since those great days aboard
"Ranger"; but none any more professional and dedicated as those 5000+
men that served along with me.

Comments: I posted here a while back but figured I'd do it again to check
in... I was in the P3 Oil Lab for most of the time, and also worked in the valve
shop during drydock at Bremerton and for a while after we came down to San Diego
after that. By the time I was discharged in the middle of the 80 cruise my
general quarters station was "Smoke Watch", the best watch station in
Propulsion. I got to sit up on top of the smoke stacks. Great view of flight
operations, as many of you know because I used to invite up masses of snipes to
check it out. Saw alot of shooting stars on the quiet dark nights. After those
years of working in the hole and being soaked with fuel and putting in long
hours it's funny what sticks out in your mind. I'll never forget the time we
were taking on fuel and I was pumper supervisor and we squirted the Chief Petty
Officers quarters out the top of a sounding tube. It wasn't too bad until the
ship leaned the other way and hundreds of gallons of fuel splashed across the
very large room in a big wave. They were pissed. I remember seeing flip flops
floating in fuel. Never thought we'd get that one cleaned up. Seeya.

appreciate John Guy's sight and would like to thank him and his wife for putting

crew shirts changed from red to purple? And whose idea was it to put a big F on
the back. That must have taken a bit to get used to.

serve this great country. I wouldn't trade that chapter in my life for anything.
