Comments: Thanks to all who served our country aboard the USS Ranger. Those who have the courage and patriotism to go in harm's way for their families, fellow Americans, and country deserve to have that service and dedication recognized and honored, as this site recognizes and honors the crewmembers of the USS Ranger. To all who served aboard the Ranger, please accept a salute of thanks and respect from this old Army officer. -- Stephen D. Smith, COL, USA (Ret.)

Comments: I was referred to this site by Brad Senter, USS Saratoga Assn. and I think you have a great page going here. Being an old Airdale, your ship has always been an inspiration to us CAG groups and Figher Squadron 31 "FELIX RULES!" and one of our motto's "We get ours at night!". Keep up the good works and put me on your mail or email list.

Comments: I served aboard Ranger's sister ships, Saratoga & Independence in the early 60's. It was sad to see her in Bremerton knowing that one of our country's greatest war ships will not sail again. Although, the memory of Ranger will not die as she will be remembered in the hearts of the 65,000 plus sailors who once called her home. An absolutely great web site, John Guy, you should be commended. A hearty well done! Brad Senter President/Executive Board USS Saratoga Association

Comments: I steamed with the Ranger in November of '62 to Dec/Jan '63. We chased the Ranger from San Francisco to Pearl while she taught her jet-jockies to land. From Pearl we went to Yukuska. Because the Agerholm, DD826 had burned her boiler firebrick, our squadron was broken up; with Hopewell(681) and Porterfield(682) going to Formasa Patrol. When the squadron regrouped we steamed with the Tiaconderoga. When we came alongside the Ranger to refuel she had a huge S&H Green stamp banner hanging from the flight deck next to the elevator where the refueling lines and hoses were. Anyone having pictures of this; copies would be muchly apperciated.

I know what it takes to make it work and you have done it. Bravo Zulu ! Worked the flight deck (night shift) as a troubleshooter/aircrewman for our squadron all three cruises. Have scars on my shins to prove it from stumbling over tie down chains in the dark. Night ops kept the adrenalin flowing! Loved the fiberglass horse mounted on the tow tractor and the 'William Tell Overture' playing when we pulled away from on-reps. Al

Comments: John you have a great web site! One that makes this ol’ Rangerman proud. Between you and Chuck with coverage of the great Gray Lady—The Top Gun—makes all who served on her proud. I hope our web site will encourage other Rangermen to help save her from the cutting torch. To all who read this check-in from time to time at www.ussrangercv61.org and find out what and when you can do your part to save her. It will take influence (to get our city officials to approve, the county, the environmental agencies, the Navy Dept and who knows who else) to get her moved, lots of money to pay for it, lots of volunteers to part-time staff necessary parts and once up and running, lots of paying customers to pay for each days maintenance and paid ships company. When you have an object that holds more people and equipment than some small cities, it doesn’t come cheap. We are currently working on a donor schedule (like Patron, Benefactor, Supporter, and Member—but not necessarily those names) for you to purchase, so watch our site. Again John, your home is great (thanks to Carol for a great job!) and thanks for putting up some of my pictures and for linking with us! Ken

Comments: Went by the Ranger today. She looks the same since day one at PSNS. Sad just sitting there. Unless you can get into PSNS you can only see her by water. The Midway is being worked on getting ready to be towed to San Diego for a muesem. The Indy was moved to the outer Pier so you can see her from outside PSNS. Tom

Did you serve aboard the USS Ranger,if so when?: 1962/1963 cruise
Comments: I was in VF-91 aboard the Ranger on the 1962/1963 cruise. I was standing on the flight deck when a Russian Badger flew off our starboard side and on his six was a F8U Crusader flown by CDR Billy Phillips. That was on our way back to the States. In 1963 VF-91 was changed to VF-194 and we deployed aboared the Bon Homme Richard.

Comments: Superb job, John! Someday, I'll be building my website to include a lot of my military history. For just a sample of what I have done, here's my Geocities page... www.geocities.com/Eureka/1534 A great deal of that page's info is now incorrect, but it was something I had fun creating at the time. Stay safe, brother.

Comments: John-- Got your e-mail of May 17th. Thanks again for the invite. You can bet I'll be back to your great site. How wonderful that you were able to actually inspect the Ranger at Bremerton. What an experience. I went with my family to NATTC Memphis 2 years ago to check out my old training school, only to find it, too, had been abandoned. We went inside the barracks and I found my old room. A memorable, but sad experience for me. I wish I could have gotten to be onboard the Ranger one more time before they moth-balled her. Take care and God Bless, Ron Bewick

Comments: Great addition with the WOG Day. I still have my TurtleBack Card and remember the FUN times on the flight deck. But, you mention that we went South for an Antisubmarine exercise, but failed to mention that we carried U-2 aircraft. Being in V-2 Division, Catapults and Arresting gear, we were well aware of what that meant. We had to re-wire the gear to capture the planes, but needed nothing to launch them. Just required two guys to balance the wings until the U-2 got some speed and then it shot straight up. Afterburner going strong. A few years ago I attended an air show out here in CA, and spoke to two current U-2 pilots. They were aware of the cruise, but didn't speak about it too much. Anyway, thanks for keping the boat alive. Because of your page and others like it, I am getting together with a fellow Catapult person later this month. It's been 36 years since he left the ship, but he is still deeply involved in Ranger.

Comments: This site is the BEST! I've been sitting here with my boys looking through all the memories. Most of my stuff was stolen (cruisebooks, etc.) before I left the ship, but thanks to you, I've just had a little slice of heaven. Job well done and thanks to your wife as I see she did a lot of the work here. I made the 12th and 13th cruises in V3 Division. Lot's of great times, Independence Day '76 in Singapore, steaming through the IO for Kenya during that hostage situation and many more. Thanks again for a great site!!

I live in Seattle and go to see her often. I miss those good ol' PI days and watching flight ops at night. I miss having chow available 21 out of 24 hours a day. Comments: Great site. I served from Dec.1974 to Dec.1977. I still remember my first day reporting on board, wondering what the hell I got myself into. I remeber my last day wondering if I shouldn't somehow try to extend my tour. I only have good memories. I am a second generation Ranger crewman. My father did several tours from about 59 to 69 with a number of airwings. I wish he was still alive to see this site. The ship and crew was definitely "Top Gun Bar None"!!!

Did you serve aboard the USS Ranger,if so when?: Served in V-2 Department, Arresting Gear and P.L.A.T. March 1975 - January 1979
Comments: When I arrived, I hated it. Three bunks high, no privacy, endless hours of flight ops at sea. But in the end, my experience on the Ranger stimulated a personal maturity and growth that, to this day, I'm grateful for. My personal motto is, "If I can survive and thrive through 4 years on the Ranger, I can do anything." Best memory: 4th of July 1976 Singapore Worst Memories: flight operation fatalities Best of the best: The great friends I made, and have lost track of. Sure would like to reconnect with some of my old friends.

Comments: Very nice site! I went to the page where one listens to all the familiar 1MC announcements - and I can't seem to shut off the recordings! Perhaps a small glitch? I have some pictures taken aboard Ranger during my time aboard and will try to get them scanned and sent off to you. I also have the cruise book from the '68-'69 cruise, which has some neat photos of that period in our history. Thanks for the invite to visit! Terry

Comments: I was a Boilerman in #1 Main Machinery Room. This gave me some of the training to persue my career as a Stationary Engineer in civilian life. I have been a Chief Engineer for 30 years at the Bechtel Building in San Francisco. My time onboard the Ranger holds many pleasant (and some not so pleasant) memories. I do believe it made me a stronger person. I would look forward to finding some of my old shipmates. By the way, some of you may remember me by my nickname "Dipsy".

Comments: I was a DP3 (Data Processing Tech.) assigned to S-7 Division from May 1974 to Feb 1975. I made 2nd Class and as a DP2 took a 6 month TAD assignment to the SMAA (Ship's Master at Arms) Force. This is about the time that MAA became a rating. We were staffed with Ship's Company predominately. After my 6 month TAD was completed, I decided to complete my last two months in the Navy still TAD to the Master at Arms. My time in the MAA was from Feb 1975 to Nov 18, 1975 when I hit my EAOS! 04 Years 00 Months 00 Days and OUT!

I would like to put out a msg for anyone who may know Jose Gonzales that was also an OS during the same time. From there Jose went to the unit responsible for apprehending AWOL and deserters. If there is anyone who may know his whereabouts I would greatly appreciate it.

Comments: Basic at Great Lakes, Radio School-Imperial Beach, CA, Language School-Monterey, CA, Assorted duty stations-Japan, Philippines, last duty station-USS Ranger, Discharged at Treasure Island, CA-San Francisco Area. On the Ranger I was in the CR Division, maintaining radio spaces as a CT. I enjoyed the duty on the Ranger and the WestPac Cruises were fine with me. I guess the least thing I enjoyed was the butter milk they served for chow when fresh milk was gone. Otherwise several Filipino cooks kept me fed for most of the time. Enjoyed overseas duty.

Did you serve aboard the USS Ranger,if so when?: early 71 - mid 72
Comments: Enjoyed your site. Brought back some good memories. Got rooked out of my WESPAC by an eye gone bad but got several CA Bay Area to San Diego trips before so got a taste. You have a drydock pic on one of your pages. Can honestly say I've reached up and held the very bottom of the U.S.S. Ranger in the palm of my hand. Bottom of a dark drydock standing directly under an aircraft carrier is a rather sobering experience. We weren't supposed to be there so didn't stay long but will never forget. Slept like a baby during night- ops 10 or so feet under the end of the catapult where it "hit" the end and launched the plane. Chipped a ton of paint off the antenna platforms that hung out over the sides. Think the red-lead probably did the eye in. Thanks RM3 USN 69 - 73

Comments: RANGER Intel Crew: Does anyone remember the picnic on the beach at Subic City (That other little town outside the gate). The instellation and lousy results of the IOIC. The high speed photo processing system to support the RA-5C product. (There is a similar system un every NEX).I spent some time in EC-121Ms,EP-3Cs, and EA-3Bs (Whales) bouncing around Cubi PT.,Danang, Ton Son Nuit and some time in the Delta. Was aboard RANGER ffor the last time at Subic in 1980.(Dan Pederson was C.O.) Anybody out there, drop me a line.

Comments: FYI... I served in OI division... CIC (Combat Information Center)... as Radarman... Seaman (E3) & PO 3rd Class (E4). On board during Nixon's mining of Haipong harbor North Vietnam. We were flag ship in Tonkin Gulf then. Interesting watching the Admiral work... we had many unknown radar tracks. Also aboard during our sneak into Sea of Japan through Kashima Staights... undetected! The last event I found documented in one of the encyclopedias... Britanica I think.

Comments: I was assigned to HS-14 as an AT2 working in QA. HS-14 went out with her on every shakedown and on one westpac during the time frame mentioned above. A great ship to serve on with memories to last a lifetime. On her westpac we had two baricade landings (successful) and two aircraft lost at sea (CH-46 during vertreps and an A-6 during a PMCF). A total of five men lost their lives during that one trip. Ah but the stories one could tell and the sights one gets to see, I'll always remember my time and friends on the USS RANGER. Feel free to send E-Mail to the address listed above, thanks

He had such wonderful memories of that ship, not to mention it is where he asked me to marry him. The ones he laughs about was on West Pac of 1987, and seem to be the most memorable of all his Navy days. I would appreciate anyone from Radio to contact me so that I can reunite him with his friends.

Onboard when we lost the A3 (full crew lost) in the Indian Ocean. Remember Wog Day, Austrialia and when Tehran Hostages were released, we were the carrier on Station at the time. Also remember the COD going down off the SD coast, 6 of the 7 killed were from OPS DEPT, most from CIC... Rumour had it was the COD hit a 'rum runner' from Mexico Reported on board Sept 80 as a DP2, made DP1 Dec 80, left Sept 83

Was on the Nimitz in Bremerton when they towed it in. Had a lot of good times on it but never went anywhere. Wasn't up for shore duty so I took a drydocked boat instead. ha ha. Comments: It was nice to re-visit the ship! :-) I did enjoy being at sea on her but just didn't like being gone all of the time. I know the navy was my life. I was so proud to wear the uniform. BTW I did two or three more reserve crusies on the RANGER during my next 20 years of reserve time. I retired as a chief. If I had to do it over again? I would still join the navy but maybe a shorter time at sea.

Comments: After a tour of shore duty at NAS Whidbey Island, Wa., trying to become an AZ, I was transfered to the U.S.S. Ranger where I was assigned to the S-6 division, aircraft stores. I did one tour of duty in the Gulf of Tonkin. I literally saw the world as promised by the Navy. Hawaii, Philippines, Japan, Hong Kong, and off the coast of Korea. I guess my favorite ports of call were Hong Kong, Yakousak, Alameda, and my two favorite duty stations NAS Miramar, and NAS Whidbey Island. The best part of my enlistment was meeting my beautiful wife of 29 years, a native Washingtonian Kathleen (LaFleur) Crowe. I am originally from Kansas City, Mo.

Did you serve aboard the USS Ranger,if so when?: Yes, July 92-July 93
Comments: After 3 years of shore duty at S.I.M.A. Pearl Harbor I did not think that my stint in the Navy could get any better. I was fortunate enough to take in 'Ranger's Last Ride'. This was the best 6 months of my time. I worked in X-2 running the computers on board. If anyone is interested, I have a copy of the last ships paper ever printed, which in turn has a copy of the headline from the first paper ever printed. Excellent Web Page.

Comments: John, you sent me an email from Classmates.com after noticing that I had served on the Ranger too. Sorry it's taken me so long to respond by coming to your site. I'm bookmarking this URL so that I can come here, many times I'm sure, and really check it out in depth. I didn't spend as much time on "her" as you did, but I still have vivid memories in how to access all the nooks and cranies, sometimes right down to each ladder required to get there!

Comments: I remember how big I thought the ship was, it was my first carrier. However, for it's size when we first came aboard there weren't enough racks for us and some of us had to sleep in our Ready Room for the first three days underway. Too much fun out of the gate. All in all though, good ship, good friends and interesting liberty ports. Great site John, thanks for letting me know about it.

Comments: Hey John. Really enjoyed the new photos by Don of Ranger at Bremington. My first ship was the Midway and it was good to see her in such good company. But I am a Cruiser Sailor at heart, as you can tell if you visit my Site above. In one of my sound files on the site, you can hear Captain McCarty talk about the Ranger planes helping us out during one of our running gun battles with the N Viets. Keep up the good work and my best to you and all the Ranger Shipmates. Dexter Goad, MCPO, USN Ret.

It may be the only one of them taken as we were under orders not to photograph them and then several years latter they were replaced by the new an more exciting rapid firing weapons. Just wanted to say you do a great job and I appreciate what you are doing. Comments: I was a data processor aboard Ranger during 82-85. I was involved with the Beruit incident. We had just turned south for Austraila, woke up the next morning expecting Wog day and found we were headed north again. Captain comes on and explains about the Marines being killed. We spend 121 days in mod-lock patroling the opening to the Persian gulf. I worked in the S-7 division. We printed out reports for all the different departments as well as printing the pay checks. I enjoyed my time on Ranger, although we spent more time in port than out.

Comments: Simply an AWESOME sight. I went through the emotional gamut when I looked at the loading picture of the ol Grey Lady. Danger Ranger ;) I must admit I almost teared up when I saw the "last ride". Reminds me of the tons (or what seemed like tons) of photo's we (crew) did ourselves (25th anniversary, top gun, Presidential visits, Queen of England...too much). Funny, I can't quite ever remember feeling so "nostalgic" and "positive" about life on the Ranger THEN as I do now :)Despite the fire(s), men lost at sea, planes going down and the 24hr duty...It all seems so necessary when forcing boys to become men. I can't imagine where I would have ended up had it not been for some tough times on the CV61! Ken Steele

Comments: I have a petition at www.speakout.com It can be found by going to "Take Action", next to "Sign Petition", then find the small link that says "show all petitions." They are sorted by date, and mine is for the 15th of October. It deals with Disabled Retired Veterans Issues. We do need to speak out and get as many people as possible to sign it. We need to show our representatives in Washington that we just aren't a few in the wilderness, but many in voting power.

Comments: I was an A7-E pilot in VA-25 (Carrier Air Wing 2) during the '72-73 Wespac cruise. I have been out of the Navy since 1974. Around 1994 I was driving past the Long Beach Naval Station and saw the Ranger in dry-dock - being cut up for scrap!! It was truly disheartening. After all, the Ranger was our safety and security after being "feet dry" over Viet Nam.

Comments: What a great web site! I was a medical lab tech on the Ranger and my health has been going a little down hill over the years. Does anybody else have gulf war type symptoms after being on the ranger pre-desert storm 1987- nov 1990? I'm more interested in memory loss, knee pain, hypertension with chest pain and hypothyriodism. The VA is helping me but its a slow process with no clear answers yet. this is a great site! I hope to hear from any shipmates from ranger medical sick or not. Keep up the great web site! Thanks Kirk Juhl AKA "JUHLMAN"

Did you serve aboard the USS Ranger,if so when?: I served from around Mid 1975 till 1-78
Comments: I was a radioman and mostly worked in the message center.. I was just a young pup and managed to stay in trouble most of the time I was on board...but I really enjoyed the duty and today I really miss the Ranger and all of the friends I made while I was on board (2 1/2 years)..... I made the 13th Westpac and had a great time...we had a lot of experiences such as major fires and crossing the equator at the whatever line it was to make us a golden shellback.. what a time that was...we were in Singapore for the celebration of the 200 bicenten. (1776-1976) with the American community and whoever else wanted to come....I was mess cranking at the time and working in the bake shop... we made the biggest American Flag cake I have ever seen... anyway I could go on and on...Bout the only thing I have left as souveniers is two coffee cups that I guard with my life....no memories of dry dock except that I was a welders fire watch down really deep in the bottom of the ship when they announced over the P.A. that Elvis was dead.. The welder had to go home because his wife had fainted... Anyway...I was discharged 1-20-78....back in in 1981...ASW at Barbers Point for three years...on the Fort Fisher (LSD?? until they just could not put up with my shenanigans in 1985. Kind of a shame I had to pick a bad path cause I was sure GOOD at what I did....Oh Well....Life is Great Now...

Comments: I met the Ranger at the Naval Shipyard in Bremerton after DK A' School. Worked in the S-4 Div (Top Gun Bank). Ship was too big (bigger than my first ship USS St Louis (LKA-116)) did not see too many ports with the Ranger. My most memorable experience was had an at-sea collision with a tank Apr 79 5:00 AM. in the Straits of Malacca. Then back to the P.I. for repairs and then to Naval Station Yokusuka's dry dock bypassing the Indian Ocean for a 60 day patrol.

I discovered that the price of freedom was appx. 6 accidental deaths per cruise. I nearly lost my mind. I explored all my sexual fantasies with foreign girls. Signed aboard in Subic Bay (Sept.'83) just before deploying for the worst IO cruise for an aircraft carrier in post war history, 121 days at sea. Comments: ETN2 - Ships company. OE (Operations Electronics) Division. Maintained all the ship's navagational aids...TACAN, LORAN, Satellite Navigation, SINS (ships inertial navigation system). It smelled of aviation fuel, we stood in line for an hour to eat, it was crowded, it was noisy. I only had 3 months left to do when she went back to West Pac. I was transferred to the Coral Sea and after about 15 minutes on the Coral Sea I realized what a Taj Mahal Ranger was. I can't go to an airport and smell the plane exhaust without recalling some old memories. I can even tell it it's a Phantom, an Intruder or a Corsair without looking up when it flies by. Most of all, I recall the friends I made in OE division. Two are still my best friends even though one lives on the east coast and the other on the west coast. "Those were the best of times and the worst of times".

Comments: I was not ship's company; I was with VA-196 for a WestPac cruise. The "Top Gun" was showing wear and tear. We dragged a screw the whole cruise, and had such a warped shaft on another that the whole ship "thrummed" whenever we got up to speed for FlightOps.

Comments: John, Great site. Thank you for doing this and thanks for the invitation to few it. I will be forwarding this page to my Dad, and my brother. He served on Ranger in the late 60's, and my brother served on one of the escort ships during her last cruise. What a great site. A lot of emotions here. Thanks John, keep up the good work, and I will be back.

Comments: John Thank you for the link and the memories. I was a plane captain on the flight deck attached to VA-25 the fist of the fleet. I wish I had more to say, but I am filled with emotions and memories of the time that I spent aboard the Ranger. Many of the photos that I had from serving on her were lost. The photos that I had seen on this site braught it all back to me. I wish that I had something to contribute to this site, but all I have is memories. And many stories. Thanks you again PO-3 Kelly E. Clakre

Comments: I JUST READ THE E-MAIL YOU HAD SENT ABOUT VOTING. THANK YOU FOR TAKING TIME OUT OF YOUR DAY TO REMIND OTHERS HOW BAD THIS COUNTRY HAS BEEN SUFFERING BECAUSE OF THE CLINTON ADMINISTRATION. I SERVED EIGHT YEARS(NAVY) BEFORE GETTING OUT. I COULD NOT STAND HIM THEN, AND I AM HAVING A REAL HARD TIME DEALING WITH IT NOW. I HAVE SINCE THEN JOINED THE IOWA ARMY NATIONAL GUARD, FOR WHICH I AM A RECRUITER FOR. IT IS HARD TO LET THE YOUNG MEN AND WOMEN KNOW WHY THEY SHOULD SUPPORT THE AMERICAN FLAG, WHEN WE HAVE SOMEONE LIKE CLINTON IN OFFICE, AND SHOWS NO RESPECT FOR THE FLAG YET THE U.S. MILITARY. ONCE AGAIN I THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME. CHINO.

I think you should know that your page is bringing up an error code when it opens. In line 1 Caracter 90 Error "Unterminated string content" Code 0. So if you want to fix it you can. Otherwise its a solid web-page. have a good day, Tom

Comments: I boarded Ranger just after she left Sri-Lanka, bound for Pattaya beach and stayed on her until May '83. I started in AIMD/GSE and got my clearance back so I could spend the rest of my time in OT/Operations working for Ron Forgnoni and Lt. Peterson. My best friends on board were Jim Rozling and Jack Zabawa. I enjoyed my time time on board, especially being able to launch and revoer in an S-3. Perth was my favorite port. I'm still doing computers and am living in Garden Grove Ca. Drop me a line.

Did you serve aboard the USS Ranger,if so when?: 1981-1982 w/ VA-145
Comments: Howdy John, It is good to see an old shipmate do such a great thing. I served aboard Ranger on my first WestPac '81-'82. I was an airdale with Attack Squadron 145 (A-6 Intruders) from Whidby Island, Washington. Met lots of great guys while on board made lots of good friends. Went on to serve aboard Eisenhower (ship's company)and got out in '85. Now undercover police officer with State Police in Texas. Good luck with website...

Comments: Guy, What a great idea. Ranger was my first carrier and where I served for what is now known as Desert Storm. I have many fond memories of my time there. She was a fine ship. I miss seeing the big "61" in white, knowing that I was almost "home". Jim Foster (formerly HM3 with VA 155)

Comments: i look back at my time in the navy with a sense of regret. i joined, after quiting school in my senior year, high on drugs, with the thought that i would growup. instead, i found a whole new world of trouble, meeting people from around the us that knew more about it than i. i joined the ranger in bremerton and almost immediately went awol. i came back when cv-61 was in san diego. from then until almost time for my discharge all i did was party. my ingrained work ethic is probably the only thing that saved me. how i regret i did not take the chance to make something of my life. i remained on drugs and did not did not growup for another 12 years until i met jesus. i am now on the straight and narrow, owning my own business for the last 8-9 years, married a good girl, and have three wonderful daughters(and am trying for a son at age 42!).so........ i am probably not the material you were looking for but i did do a good job while i was there. and i am grateful for the chance to tell a fellow ranger my story.

Comments: I readed your consern about the parts being taken off the old girl. It is something that the navy started doing because of the cut backs. There are very few ships that are being spare this fate. There was talk of bring her to San Diego a few yaer ago but that has stop sence the Midway is the more prefured ship.It is & was a good ship. I was a Airdal on for years. With one of the squarderns on her.It sad to stay it will probely met it fate like so many of the old ship before her.I miss her because it was alway reasuring to see her in San Diego bay & knowing what she is cable of. Thank you for the site. P.Klees USN

Comments: To All Ranger Shipmates Past and Present. After reading many of your great memories which you gave your time to write I thought a great lady and warrior (Ranger) deserved a little more of my memories of her. What can I say about how this mighty warrior, and super lady has made an impression on my life, one that I shall never forget. The time I served onboard Ranger (87-93) was partly during peacetime and partly during the Persian Gulf Crisis. I guess I shall remember the events of our time on station in the Persian Gulf most of all. Ironically, in a time when the Supercarrier (the Nuclear Age) is the ship to serve on, the Gulf War was fought with all conventional carriers, five carriers in all. The Ranger truly was the cornerstone ship in the Persian Gulf. Now that the Ranger is gone (resting in some mothball fleet) her memory lives on. Still living in San Diego, everyday I look across the bay and see Coronado and North Island. The Carriers may be newer and sport a different number on the superstructure, but they will never have a history as rich as that of Ranger's.
