Comments: What a stroll down memory lane. The things that come back to you when you see the images of THE TOP GUN. The long hours in CIC and then trying to sleep under the #3 wire on the 03 level, the cold showers and the bad food. But i wouldn't trade those days for anything If there are any OI div guys out there drop me a line. I would like to try and find PRESTON JONES, PAUL GERACI, GARY SODERQUIST, DAVE SPEARS, SCOTT ROBINS AND ESPECIALLY DAVE HOOPLE. Dave is still in the navy and assigned to a ship somewhere. Probably deployed in the middle east doing the work of the rightous.

Comments: Just checking in. I signed the book a couple years ago. I lost touch with some of the guys I used to talk to. I worked in fly one as blueshirt then later yellowshirt. working as a blueshirt was tough work. Especially during recovery. I remember watching us government equipt. getting deep sixed. bad tow bars and chalks.(won't admit to taking part in it) Only a guy who served as a blueshirt would understand this. (grin) We had a great Captain. Leo McCudden. (don't forget "Cuddles") zI worked with Leota, Fox, Pike, Bisom, DeMartino, Baur, Foster, Lemke, Taylor, Galli, Rogers, Boetsch and a hundred others.

Comments: It was quite an experience being in the Navy and having the privledge of serving on the USS Ranger. I was in OI Divison, transferred up from 3rd Division. Made 3 WestPac cruises during my tour of duty. Favorite liberty port was 'PO Town'. I met my wife while the ship was homeported in Alameda. My wife, two sons, and myself live in California. I presently work for the USPS in San Mateo California. Once a 'Top Gun', always a 'Top Gun'. If anyone wants to email me, feel free to do so. I met alot of nice people aboard ship. And until we are shipmates again.......

Comments: As my first "flat-top" the Ranger will always hold a special palce in my heart. My first child was born while in the North Arabian sea; two days later my grandmother died. those are memories that make "her" my girl. I was a catpult man assigned to the bow cats and if hard work ethics were not instilled in me when I got there, they were for sure there when I left her. I get a little weepy when I see the pictures of her in bremerton, but the way the world is now, perhaps she may sail again. I especially remember Capt. Davis (ret) as a leader of men and a proud Navy man. Many kudos to you and you website. It really made my day! ABE1 carter (ret) respectfully.

Comments: I served aboard the USS FOX during the 80-81 Westpac, Everywhere the Ranger went the FOX went to. I spent two days aboard her while in transit to the FOX. As a new wet behind the ears seaman duece I was in awe of this symbol of America's power. What a beautiful ship! I saw her last in Long Bch after her decommissioning. I felt a sense of regret just seeing her there. Those were fun times for me. The good ship is also part of Bill Clinton's mothball Navy. You never forget your first one. David Miller

Comments: Top Gun Bar None -- I write this on Dec 8, 2001. After the great coverage CVA's are getting in the media. I worked in the Ops Office and also in Air Intelligence and later the IOIC. This site brought back many great memories for me. I now have a nephew on the Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72). Also, went on to serve a 21 year career in the Navy. Ranger was my first duty station after flunking out of ET "A" school. I retired in 1981 as a YNC. Ranger was and always will be the best duty station I had. Thanks for the many memories.

Comments: Some how I sent my comment without finishing it. I mentioned it brought back memories. Good and Sad ones. Was anyone out there when it was sabotage just before we left San Francisco? We were on our way to Vietnam. The big fire in Japan that left us stranded in the middle of the ocean for about a week, and the catapults breaking, sending a refueler, to the bottom of the ocean. Ranger aircraft’s colliding with the Uss Enterprise. Lots of sad things, but at the same time, much wonderful things also. As some mentioned WestPac was a blast, Tiny Tim making his appearance, and the good old Lone Ranger cruising across the flight deck when we pulled into port. Remember that GOOFY movie they filmed on the Ranger, it was called Family Flight?

BT2 Vuylsteke, AK2 Teeter still more out there I am sure. Retired from the Navy in May 95 as a PN2. I recently tied the knot to a very lovely lady. I have been in contact with both DK1 (now DKC ret.) Greg Sullivan and Dennis Dunn. Will have to give them both the info on this site. Great job, John. Reading some of the comments brings back great memories onboard her. Did you serve aboard the USS Ranger,if so when?: 1978-1981
Comments: I came aboard the Ranger when it was in drydock up in BREMERTON, WASHINGTON, Rode it back to San diego. I worked in the boatswain locker for about 2 years till I transfered to the east coast. Had a great WESTPAC tour, and was there when we collided with the oil tanker in 79, the one good thing out of the collision was getting out of the indian ocean and getting to see japan. Would like to hear from anyone who would remember me. GREAT SITE JOHN

Comments: I was on the 1983 West-Pac when we broke the world record of 121 days at sea. We also caught fire in the Indian Ocean, and last but not least, ran into an oil tanker while taking on fuel. I think we lost the left rudder. PI was great. The clap line was longer than the chow line. OHHHH for some White Castle RUM and some MOJO..... you all know what I mean....

Comments: Strongest memories of my time on the Ranger was hearing the "Lone Ranger" theme blare from the 1MC each time we flew a sortie against the Iraqis during the Persian Gulf War. She was an old bucket by the time I served on her, and after being stationed on a cruiser, she was too large for my comfort. But she served her country well, as did all the crew members who worked onboard her. If anyone worked in OI division during the same time I was onboard the Ranger, drop me a line via email!

Comments: My Dad served aboared the Ranger 1962-1966. He worked in S1. He past away 6yrs ago from cancer and I think about him everyday. I got to thinking about the Ranger last night and performed a web search today. I landed on your site, my second hit. Thank you for creating this page. I grew up with stories of the Ranger and she will always have a large part of my heart. I served in the Army from 1990 to 1993 and until today I did not know that she was there with me. Keep up the good work and Thank you again your time and effort has allowed me to spend a little more time with my Dad, a least in memory. Sam Bowers

Comments: I was an enlisted man stationed in the Intellegence Center and in Strike Operations. I met many Officers and crew who I would love to have kept in touch with. But being young and dumb I lost most of thier addresses and phone numbers. That is what I regret the most. I hope to hear from all who I served with and regain those friendships lost over time.

Did you serve aboard the USS Ranger,if so when?: January 1883-March 1984
Comments: I was "MARDET" but proud to be one of the Rangermen. My highlights onboard were going to Central America, seeing Queen Elizabeth, Vice Pres Bush, 121 days in the IO (A record), and all the sights and sounds of a west-pac. I espechially enjoyed your bit on Master Chief Hobbs. He was a great guy and good to serve with. I remember many times while up cleaning the 03, he would walk by and set a back down near us, full of dunuts every time. When we had the bad fire in 9/83, it was Hobbs who kept going down there to try and rescue people, after others had become overwhelmed. My hats off to the Ranger and all who served aboard her...!

Did you serve aboard the USS Ranger,if so when?: 1976-1979 OE Division
Comments: What a great way to bring back memories. My time was during the dry dock, collision, WestPac79, Sucking up mud in North Island, and many a days at sea. I look back and attribute much of my "lifes' lessons" to the men I served with on the Ranger. Does anyone else remember the fuel in our water...burning your Bug Juice prior to drinking it...the 5 second showers...and then the water pressure was gone when it came time to rinse. The $1,000,000.00 head we built in the dry dock. The chipping guns and fire watch days of the yards. The time I enjoyed most was kicking back on the forward round down at midnight and looking up at the billions of stars. I was privilidged to serve with the greatest guys around...thanks for the memories and guidance.

Met one of the greatest CO's, Captain Roger Box in Fallon, Nevada. Consumed copious amounts of adult beverages and had some interesting conversation with him one night. Never forget the order he gave in Pearl Harbor to a young female junior officer, to put the enlisted brow up first!

Comments: My first ship out of boot camp. Went to IM-3 to get some OJT before going off to AV "A" School in Memphis, ended up in V-4 as a grape 3 weeks later. Departed 6 months later during our first port visit in PI. Now as a LT in the Coast Guard, I often recall those days of my youth and the great times I had working on the flight deck. San Diego was also an awesome home port.

Comments: Worked in Personnel then was the Discipline Officer and Retired from the Ranger. Whatever happened to PN1 Jack CURRY? He took over in Discipline. Remember Capt Fred hitting the USS Wichita on our way to Hawaii. Remember the phantom crapper on the 83 cruise. He was a chief from a squadron that liked to dump in engineering spaces and finally got caught in a passageway.

Did you serve aboard the USS Ranger,if so when?: yes, 1979-1981 & 1987-1989
Comments: Spent alot of time on this fine ship. Did 2 tours of duty on her, both in #3 Main Machinery Room. Did 4 Westpac Deployments, many an hour steaming 3A & 3B boilers! Had the chance to serve with alot of great guys, have not heard from a one of them, I hope that with this here, I will. Since the days of the Ranger, I served on the USS Waddell DDG-24, did 6 years of Recruiting Duty here in St. Louis, Missouri and my last years at Naval Hospital Great Lakes. I Retired from the Navy in December 1999. Had many a great time on the Ranger, went places I never will see again, was on when the collision at sea took place in April 79. Just lots of good times now that I look back at it, too many here to list. Found this site just cruisin the net, found Mark Vulstyke provided alot of pictures for the site, (used to be his Boiler Technician of the Watch). Wonder what some of my buddies from the days are doing now, Bob Wallace, Mike Horn, and the rest. Almost wish with these terror attacks on our country, that we could get the team together and steam her again, sad to see her sitting there like she is. I hope the committee trying to save her, does. Would like to one day see her again. My email address is kenny@brick.net if anyone sees this from the old days, please give me a holler. Only one real regret, I never made CPO before I retired, but would not have missed what I did for the world.

Comments: As most of you, I have many great memories of that time in my life. At the time, I hated serving in the Navy but it was the very best thing I ever did for myself. Had I not toughed-it-out and become a "hacker", no telling what kind of loser I'd be today. Best memories are of the fine people I came to know and love: PFC Briggs (hated him/respected him), Cooney, Jones, Kevin Gilliard , Rick Jackson, Dave Barnes, Jim Hearn, Mike Reget, Capt. Nicholas, Petrimoulx, Clem Padiken...and so many others. Sure would like to make contact with any of you who served in V-2, then.

Comments: Hey anybody!! I'm in the process of putting together another flight jacket to replace the one I lost. I've been able to find and have been given quite a few patches to go on it, however I'm having a VERY hard time finding 3 patches in particular and would be very gratefull for any assistance. I'm still looking for a squadron patch for both VS-21 and HS-2, and of course I need alot of help finding the elusive 1982 Cruise patch. Comments: You have an excellent site here. I was on the Ranger during the 83-84 deployment when we had a terrible boiler explosion and spent 121 days at sea. I was an AN then attached to VA-192, an A-7E Squadron out of Lemoore Ca. I retire in less than a year, and I still (and always will) have fond memories of my first cruise on Ranger. Keep up the good work here, its a great site.

Comments: Dear John, I was wondering if you could contact me with some information on the CVA-61 Ranger. My father was a part of it's initial skeleton crew that sailed around the horn. He served in '58 to I do not know when. He has asked me to find some info for him, most specifically to see if some of his old crew mates are still with us and available for contact. Thanks for your time and help.

Comments: I was in VF-154 (the world's best jet squadron). I have very fond memories of "Top Gun", CVA-61. I recall when we went to the Sea of Japan to help rescue the USS Pueblo. We went from Yankee Station (Tonkin Gulf)where the temp was ~90 deg to Korea in January ('68). I worked on the flight deck and when we turned into the wind to launch, boy was it cold (-20 deg). We spent 60 plus days on line before going to Sasebo. The first day in port, I pulled shore patrol. I never saw so many drunken sailors that day. Well, anyway, this is a great site and thanks for maintaining it. Best of luck, Bill Crockett

Comments: It was sure nice touring this site again, and reliving the memorys. I especially liked replaying the sounds you most commonly hear on board such as reville, taps, GQ, etc. It was nice to see all the pictures of the ship, too, even if she is starting to rest at her new port in Bremerton. I have alot of good memorys of being with the ship when she was going through the yard period there in 1984-85. This is a great site, and I plan on coming back often !!

I worked in the Anti-Submarine Warfare module (part os CIC/Ops Dept), worked closely with the VS sqdrns Was on board for her 25th birthday, became a shellback on her. sad events: an A-3 from VQ-1 was lost (7 soles lost)and within a few a days a helo went down (all rescued from that though), C-1 Cod was lost just one day from returning from workups. Lots of memories..............

Comments: As you obviously know,my stay on Ranger was short lived.I couldn't quite spread my young wings(just turned 18)and fly straight. Most of my memories of Ranger were of the chaos I got into while on board.Did the 45-45 tour of the boat and 90 days in Seattle brig(regretably)but I had alot of fun.Discharged under honorable conditions in May 84.I will return to her one day and see if I can still find my way around and over her kneeknockers. After all,I had 45 days restricted to learn her passageways.John Sowder, Aaron Cutlip,oh my the names rush to the memory banks of my mind.

This would make it easier to find old shipmates rather than trudging through people who served over a 30 plus year span. Other than, great site!

Comments: I can still smell the stack gas, taste the fuel in the bug juice and remember very well trying to sleep through airops. I berthed under the #3 wire on the O3 level. Getting enough sleep was always a challenge. Working 8-n-8 in CIC while deployed always kept my Rolex on time but it would slow down when I went home on leave because I slept about 18 hours a day. But being in the radar gang had it's perks: we had chow line priviledges during sea&anchor detail and were some of the first to hit the beach on liberty after we shut down. Thanks John. Marcus

Did you serve aboard the USS Ranger,if so when?: Decom Cruise Westpac 92-93
Comments: I was in VAW-116 as an E-2C Aircrewman on "Ranger's last Ride" WESTPAC 92-93. We were on the first Operation Southern Watch tour and we set the stage and were the first on scene for Operation Restore Hope (Somalia). We got back to San Diego on Superbowl Sunday 1993. That was the last time CV-61/USS Ranger embarked on a deployment with an airwing. The next time I saw her was with shrink wrap around the island at the Long Beach shipyard...

Comments: It was an interesting read of your web site and brought back some memories of Nam during 70/71 when I was serving on HMAS Perth. I recall when Ranger was tied up aft of us in Subic, a group of enterprising sailors from Ranger and Perth were 'apprehended' trying to lower the Lone Ranger's horse onto the fantail(quarterdeck)of Perth. I also remember the Ranger was effectively tagged with red kangaroos as a momento of her time with Perth. We used to wonder, when alongside on unreps with the Ranger, who the 'good looking round eye female, with the lone ranger was. The mystery has now been solved. Keep up the good work on your site and a BRAVO ZULU to all concerned.

Comments: Nice site John. I just made contact with another Radioman from the Ranger thanks to a site like this. I hadn't heard from or talked to the guy since July of 1960; 41 years. I was a Radioman aboard Ranger. I'm trying to find out if there are any Radio Amateurs (I'm W7LW) who would like to try and put our hobby to some kind of use in aiding the preservations efforts. I don't know what that might be yet, but would like to start some brain storming with any of the "Sparkies" who might be out there. For example, there are a lot of Hams and SWL's ( short wave listeners) out there who may get the "SOS" (save our ship) message, just by listening to Ranger talk on a scheduled network. It's worth a try. "Hams" have come to the rescue more than once; they have that history.

Comments: Spent the last three years of my Navy career aboard the USS Ranger CVA61 in the OA Division. Duties included weather briefings and flight forecast for combat missions over North and South Vietnam,Cambodia and Gulf of Tonkin waters. The ship was on duty in the Gulf of Tonkin during the Vietnam ceasefire along with two other carrier battlegroups. My congrats on a great website. Interested in locating and corresponding with shipmates/friends.

Comments: Just found this site tonight;I'm a tad emotional. I had no idea that anything like this existed. This is a wonderfull place. I have only met two people that have served on Ranger and they were young guys. I just e-mailed a lady on this site who had a father that was a crew member during my time period. she wanted to know if anyone knew him or knew of the "fire". I responded to her; I didn't know her dad, but remember the fire well. I believe it was in the fall of 58,off of the California coast. It was an ordinance locker that blew up with an ensuing fire. I was in the 2nd division (later OR Division)at the time and was part of the clean up crew the next day; what a mess. I think two crewmen were killed. It happened in the early morning hours. Anyone else remember this? I would be happy to assist in saving Ranger; it was my first home away from home (Montana). Ed McKnight, RMSN, Ranger Sailor

The Flight deck is A very dangerous place and the watchfull eye of the skipper from his tower kept yelling at us and calling us by name (yes capt. Nick knew our names)to duck and keep our stuff wired tight some of use would not be around today .looking forward to hearing from old friends give me A shout anytime I spent 4-th of July 2001 with the old girl in Bremerton

Comments: Thanks for bringing back great memories of Ranger. I could almost smell the fumes from the flight deck and hear the jets whine as they were readied to be kicked into the skies from the forward cats. I heloed off her later in the morning after we had that collision in the Straits of Malacca on my way to retirement in 1979. She was a good ship and certainly Top Gun of the PacFlt. Congratulations on a fine, worthy site.

Did you serve aboard the USS Ranger,if so when?: Dad served 5-69 through 5-72
Comments: My dad, mustang CDR William G. Norcross USN (Ret.) died 29 Nov 96 at age 63 suddenly and unexpectedly. There was no autopsy so we know it had to be one of the 3-4 catastrohic events that can drop you in mid-step. He had become a police officer in Texas (our home state) at age 60, and true to form, graduated 2nd in his class against the young studs. Mom, Kitty Norcross, lives in Abilene (his twilight tour was CO of 3 reserve training centers around Texas). I live in Seattle, and his daughter Linda Rutherford, lives in Garland, TX. He is sorely missed. He was a special man who had that unusual combination of being a leader of men, but one who treated the lowliest seaman with respect. Dad served as W Division Officer on the Ranger from 5-69 to 6-72. I would very much appreciate any brief recollections of Dad (real examples of his personality in action) from those who served with him on the Ranger, JFK or any other tours of duty in his outstanding 38.5-year career. Long live the Danger Ranger! Best regards. Bill.

Bill.

Comments: Looking for Owen Cogburn we were in the deck department together. I worked on the Captains Gig for the most of the time I was on Ranger. I remember when we were in Subic Bay me and the engineer George Strausbaugh had to spend three days and nights on the gig while it was tied out in something like a yacht club during a typhoon. That was the longest three days of my life. I have some pictures of the Bicentennial Cruise I will pass on if I can find them.

Comments: Used to be a Weapons Tech back before we got converted back to Gunnersmates in 94. Worked in the SASS spaces fore and aft. You probably recall these spaces, there was a marine posted in a little cage at the entrance. Hated to see her go, have some great memories of the Ranger, 2 westpacs, became a shellback, and served onboard during Desert Storm.

Comments: If anyone is looking for an old shipmate, or any military buddy, contact American Veteran Search. They will find them. I put in a name of a shipmate on a Thursday and Monday they contacted me. They had found him. I looked for this guy for 42 years. They have an ad in this guest book Just a few below this one. It's a nice thing to find someone that has been as close as a brother to you after 40 some years. Try it, You'll like it. They found him without being paid. When I got their e-mail, they asked of a membership fee of $19.95. I spent 50 times that amount looking for him over the years. Thanks guys. H. K. G.
