worked v-4 Div. remember the drag race with the Kitty Hawk, and also the flour sack bombing down the flight deck of the Kitty Hawk. The crew of the Ranger showed who was Top Gun in the Pacific. Look for shipmate Dennis Zink or anyother shipmate in v-4 div. I served with e-mail me. Great web page.

I went aboard the U.S.S. Ranger the first time in 1968 thru Yokosuka and joined with the VA-147 group at Atsugi, Japan. I was on board when the Ranger went up to Korea during the U.S.S. Pueblo seizure. I served on the avionics team on board on its last cruise to Veit Nam. I was discharged at San Diego before it was decommissioned to Bremerton.

I was on the Ranger during the west-pac '83 and we caught on fire in the Indian Ocean. We also had a rudder failure and crashed into an un-rep ship while taking on fuel. I was kissed on the cheek from EVERY Dallas Cowboy Cheer Leader. I was on the bridge, and saw them getting ready to leave the flight deck after the air show. I quickly ran down the ladder to hold the hatch open for them. I had lipstick all over my face. haha. Had a great time in PI, and Pearl Harbor. All other liberty was cancled. On station for 121 days in the persian Gulf, went over the equator only once. Capt. Frederickson was a flying A-Hole. Yes, an education I could not have bought at Harvard. Rodney Balam Carter III was the division officer and he got me to AC school and really made a difference in my life. I later heard he was killed in the fire on the Connie. Served with the U.S.M.C. during this time. If I was still a smoking man I would really miss the $1.00 a carton for cigaretts once we left port. Enjoyed all the ports from Hawaii, to Japan although as a young man I didn't go on sight seeing tours other than the bars and various houses of pleasure. Would love to hear from other Marines that I served with. This is my 2nd entry to this book. I can't find the first entry from 2001.

This old ship could hardly make it out of San Diego Harbor in November 1976; we had two or more fires in the engineering spaces by the time we got around Pt Loma. But it finally smoothed out and we spent the next two weeks in a test of the Reserve Air squadrons in the wing. Must say, we did well, with VF, VA squadrons on board, the usual contingent of supporting detachments. First time I'd been back on board a CVA since two west pacs on USS Hancock, CVA-19, in 1965-67. Unfortunately, we did lose one pilot on this 2 week deployment due to ramp strike of his A-6. We were not able to rescue him as he was unconscious and his chute billowed out pulling him underwater. As a member of the helo squadron on board, HC-9, I was especially disappointed we weren't successful..

I reported aboard Ranger while in drydock at Hunters Point. I was a radioman in CR div. and made a WestPac, Gulf of Tonkin (Yankee Station), in and out of Subic (Olongopo!!!!) and Yokosuka for boiler repairs. Seems like we spent more time in port than on station. I just looked at the Wog day pictures from the "mysterious cruise" off South America. I remember in Hunter's Point that I was on watch in the "radio shack" when the news flash came in telling us that our President had been assasinated in Dallas. Will never forget. Good times at Hunter's Point, bowling with my division against other div's. Our team was called the "Gutter Hounds" because we were real good at gutter balls. I remember spending Christmas at Chaplain Capers home in Berkeley. Often wondered what happened to him. He married my wife and I and she was the organist for Sunday services while Ranger was in drydock. Rader and Willingham......are you still out there? Remember the Christmas party where everyone got so drunk and tried to trim the tree? If there are any communications gang checking this site, whether you remember me or not, drop me an e-mail and share some memories from those years. I was in OI DIV one of the mushrooms in CIC while underway, man those were the days. Was in the yards for overhaul,Went on west pac (loved Subic). When we hit that tanker I went to my GQ station in my underware on the Flag Bridge with Admirals breathing down my neck.I really have some awesome and beautiful memories on the Ranger. I remember one morning when I was a lookout supervisor going up to wake up the lookouts so they wouldn't get written up, I looked out at the Pacific and it was as smooth as a piece of glass not a ripple one then right out of the blue a whale the size of a school bus cleared the water a good 20 ft. then the rest of his herd joined his Ranger wake up call, along with the Captain who announced it!! And does anyone remember the Dolphins off the coast of Viet Nam there had to be thousands of them walking on their tails and jumping up by the sponsons laughing.Yes those were the days mates.Well if anyone remembers gettin a haircut in the OI coupe from Springer drop me a line.

Worked every job in arresting gear. 30,000 safe landings with our team! Great memories of Alameda, Hunters Point, 2 westpac cruises, Subic, Japan, Singapore, Honk Kong, Maintenace in Long Beach, Initiation becoming a shellback, etc. Great memories. Looking for anyone from those years Moglia,Papa,Lyles,Walker,Howdyshell,Pickens,Koblitz,Dawson to name a few. It was 30 years ago, but seems like yesterday. Even today, when I speak of my experiences on that great ship I get a tremendus feeling of pride for having served on the USS. Ranger CVA 61.

I would enjoy hearing from shipmates during the time I was onboard Ranger. Some one may recall that the Lone Ranger and Tonto were ambushed one time during an unrep. Can't recall all the details but there was a Chief Gunners Mate involved. I retired from the Navy in 1978 as a Senior Chief Electricans Mate.
