Did you serve aboard the USS Ranger,if so when?: 1986-1990
Comments: I served aboard the ranger from 86-90. I went into the navy
right after high school.I'm glad I did. I got to see a lot of ports , most of
them twice. I did 2 westpacs and 2 wog days. I also saw the ranger in dry dock,
and let me tell you, you think she's big in the water her size really is amazing
out of the water. I also had a shipmate he was killed on my first west pac, Todd
Unzueta. That was the first time I had to identify a body. God rest his soul. I
will never forget the good time I had. I would do it all again if I had to.

Did you serve aboard the USS Ranger,if so when?: '67-'71 OE Div
Comments: I often think of the seemingly endless days at sea, launching
aircraft and recovering for hours. The people with whom we worked were friends
and sometimes adversaries but always sharing the time and experiences which we
now look back upon with a degree of fondness. I would love to gather the crew
together and quietly talk about how the experience of the Ranger has impacted
each one of us. My memories are clouded by time, but I would not trade them for
anything.

Comments: This brings back lots of memories. I am looking for some of my
pictures I took when we were in the Sea of Japan after the North Koreans took
the U.S.S. Publo. Everyone seems to be doing a great job and I hope I can help
in some way. I am recovering from cancer and right now I am on Social Security
Disability so money is tight but I plan on doing what ever I can to help. Good
luck to everyone and keep up the good work.

Did you serve aboard the USS Ranger,if so when?: June 1974-Nov. 1975
Comments: I got assigned to S-7 Div. in June 1974 as a DP3. Shortly
thereafter I made DP2. Great bunch of guys! We operated the computers on the 2nd
deck (amidships). In March 1975 I went TAD to the Master-At-Arms Dept. (wasn't a
rating yet). Served under the MCPOC. TAD assignment was 6 months - but I was
allowed to extend it until my EAOS (11/18/1975) thanks to a GREAT officer in
Supply Dept. CMDR Kalafut! Those were some great times. Discharged from Ranger
in Coronado, CA. I missed the change of homeports in June 1975 because I took 35
days leave and drove my 1974 VW across the USA. I am still driving the car I had
back then AND more importantly I am still working in Data Processing now for 30+
years. Plan to retire in 5 years or so. TOP GUN BAR NONE!!! Was it just me or
did Capt. A.E. Hill sound like John Wayne over the 1MC? "Good Morning Top
Guns... this is the Captain speaking.."! Go NAVY

Comments: I signed in once before, but thought it might be of interest to
all that I ran into my former CO of RANGER, RADM (Ret) Roger Box, during the
Midway Reception held on board CONSTELLATION this past June. I later gave a tour
of the ship to the Admiral and his relatives in early July. He is doing well and
lives in San Diego. I really miss a lot of people from the RANGER and wonder
what they are up to today. If anyone knows the status on John Mccartney, YNCM
Yost, PNC Ed Pettigrew, or PN2 Dargel let me know. You can contact me at
VanIderR@constellation.navy.mil I am currently the Admin Officer on board

Comments: This may sound strange, but I was aboard the USS Yellowstone
AD/27 when the Ranger was in Cuba. I was in the service from 1955 - 1959 and we
did sail with each other from time to time. I would have liked to have made a
transfer but was not able to at the time. I enjoyed the 4 years I was aboard and
still keep in touch with some of he shipmates. God bless and have a fine summer.

Comments: Two days out of my C schools I reported aboard the USS Ranger.
Duffle bag on my left shoulder, garment bag on the right shoulder and an
overnight case floating in between somewhere. About halfway up the after-brow I
reached for my wallet and pulled out my ID card and drivers license. The next
thing I know there's a strong gust of wind out of nowhere, and I see both cards
floating like a couple of leaves into the water and disappear. I didn't have any
trouble replacing the cards. The Chief at the after-brow saw the events unfold.
In between laughs he said he would take me down to the MAA to get the paperwork
started for a new card. Day One, three more years to go. Daniel B. Perez DS2

1979. During that cruise we were on our way to the Indian Ocean to relieve the
Kitty Hawk. We collided with a Liberian tanker. We Immediately returned to the
Phillipines for repairs. Afterwards we were rerouted to Yokasuka Japan to be
sized for a new BOW. The BOW was delived with a BIG RED BOW on the BOW at the
conclusion of our cruise. The MIDWAY had to cancel everyones leave and set sail
to relieve the Kitty Hawk. Needless to say, they were not too happy. I'll always
remember the USS RANGER!!!

Comments: I was a jet engine mechanic attached to VS-37. Ranger was my
first cruise. We visted Mombasa, Phattya Beach, Hong Kong, Subic Bay. Went TAD
to the aft galley, what a treat! Also did numerous REFTRAs on board her through
the early 80's. I have quit a few pictures, I'll look through them and send some
your way. Your picture of the ship in Bremerton isn't dated, is Ranger still
afloat or has she been reduced to razor blades? Will write soon, Chuck-Class of

did acuire a fondness for her as long as she wasn't in port in Subic when we
were. Great site and good luck in your presevation efforts. Fair winds and

Comments: I am pleased to find this website. I was contacted by Bill
Smith throught The Classmates Link. Thank you Bill, I have been taken back in
time, a wonderful time in my life, when I had "Navy Buddies", and
membership in a unique felowship of dedicated men, onboard "The Navy's Top
Gun" USS Ranger. I had the privilage of serving onboard Ranger twice.
Ranger was my first ship out of Boot Camp, March 6, 1963, and my first ship
after receiving my commision through the Limited Duty Officers Program June,
1978. I had the distinction of becoming the highest ranking person within the
Auxiliaries Division, Auxiliaries Officer, during my last assignemnt. I was
assigned to the Auxiliaries division as Fireman Apprentice on my first tour
onboard Ranger. Ranger was also my last tour of duty prior to my retirement in
April 1982. I must admit, when I played the "General Quarters" sound
bite, I became a little emotional as a flood of memories came back to me.
Particularly when the Quarter Master announced that Condition Zebra would be set
in three minutes. As I was assigned to Repair Party Three as my General
Quarters, I was responsible for setting condition Zebra for the after part of
the ship. You can emagine the effort that is required to properly close all
hatches, and scuttles in the after part of a ship the size Ranger was. I may
have a few stories, and artifact that can be contributed to this very worthy Web
Site. I will be contacting Bill to see if I have anything worth while. In the
mean time I want to say Hi to any of my Buddies that may stumble onto this log
entry. God Bless, and "Remimber The Men Who Sail Below."

Did you serve aboard the USS Ranger,if so when?: 1982 - 1985
Comments: Just spent the last hour going through the site for the first
time. Great site and pictures--brought back wonderful memories. I reported
onboard right out of 'A' school (DPSR). Spent a few months in S-7 then moved to
ops -CVIC. Left as a DP3 a few months after pulling into Bremerton. 20 years
later I'm still standing tall when I talk about my days on board, including the
121 days at sea. We sure had some rough days, but looking back...I would do it
all over again. My Dad was a tiger on the '83' WESTPAC...20 years later, he's
still talking about it. I'm in the Reserves now (ITC) currently on active duty.
Look forward in hearing from anyone from the past. Too all my fellow Ranger
Men...God Bless

Did you serve aboard the USS Ranger,if so when?: No, but...
Comments: ..always thought a big ship would've been fun. My "dream
sheet" at the Receiving Station, Brooklyn Navy Yard, 1967 included an East
Coast CV. Anyway, this fleet rated (DK2) spent almost two years in the 'Bees
('67-'68). It was reasonable ashore sea-duty and if you didn't mind the sporadic
incoming during a deployment, it wasn't too bad. Would have preferred a small,
informal ship vs. spit 'n polish CV's, CGN's, flagships, etc., but don't think
small ships reqired my rate though. Great site; always interesting to read
others' thoughts and comments on their naval experience. "CAN DO!"

Comments: Ranger was manned by a great bunch of guys. The first skipper
let the X.O. run the ship and he was a tyrant. Captains mast looked like a
personnel inspection, there were so many men there. I went to mast one time for
failure to turnoff one light in a space I did not even know we had. I was an AB3
and the X.O. threatened to bust me. Not a lot of good memories here. Was never
so glad to leave a ship in my life. I took a discharge to get off the Ranger,
and re-upped one month later. I finished 20 years as an ETC. If anyone

Best times= Pulling into Hong Kong harbor at sunrise. Watching dolphins come out

hours late getting back to the boat (Thanks Captain Glindeman, I needed that. I
had a bad attitude!) I still have my Ranger "Year Book" from the

Did you serve aboard the USS Ranger,if so when?: 8/76-10/79 CR

Comments: CR Division on Ranger was my first real duty station. After
completing nearly 10 months of Boot Camp,RM "A" school, and Morse code
"C" school in San Diego I reported aboard Ranger following her 76
west-pac. The next three years are full of some of the most memorable events of
my life. I only wish I had stayed in touch with some of the great people who
worked (and partied) along side me. I'm excited to see that there are a few
friends who have already found this site and signed in. During the overhaul of
77/78 I was fortunate enough to go to more schools in San Diego... Teletype
repair, and Xerox 7000 repair, which ended up leading me to my present career
with Xerox. The West-Pac cruise of 79 was full of surprises and fond memories
I'll never forget. Thanks to the webmaster and all who helped make this a cool
website. I look forward to meeting with you at the Reunions, and aboard
"Top Gun" again soon! Comm. Rats Rule

Did you serve aboard the USS Ranger,if so when?: Yes, October 1966 -
November 1968
Comments: I served in the Weapons Department, "W" Division.
Many times over the years I think back to the time that I spent on the Ranger.
Being on Yankee Station, working 12 on & 12 off, going on liberty. I left
the Ranger in November 1968 & was released from active duty. Then in April
1983 I joined the Navy Reserves. I've been in the Navy Reserves since that time,
19 years this coming April. I made YNC on 16 September 2001. On 23 September
2001 I was recalled to active duty. I'm currently stationed at Naval Weapons
Station Yorktown, Yorktown, VA. My God how the U. S. Navy (active) has changed.
I'm 54 years old and the oldest person at my command. Please e-mail me if you

Comments: Great site. Link was from "Goat Locker" site. Lots of
memories from the old V-5 Division. We were the first AQ/GF ratings aboard the
Ranger. Made the shakedown cruise to Gitmo and then around the Horn. First
WesPac in 59. Didn't know she was decommissioned until I saw your site. Still
have the cruise book from the 58 round the Horn cruise, an ashtray and a couple
of patches.

Comments: Came aboard during overhaul in Bremerton Dry dock. Met some
great guys in indoc class...served with Ed Davis in the AC&R shop then later
in P-4, making the electricity and water for the crew. My first child was
conceived on the way from Bremerton to San Diego (Trek South - Run for the Sun)
with my wife aboard and our car on the flight deck. Looking for Ed Davis, Pete
Merritt (spin 48 radar), anyone from the Sportbike Club circa 1986. The best
place for a kid to grow up is in the US Navy. Great site.

Comments: I worked with some great guys on board the ole Ranger. I
remember some funny stuff too. 12 of us shaved our heads on our way to Hawaii on
the 78 Westpac. I was number 12 and could have cried afterwards. I remember us
looking for a Luau in Honolulu and we heard drum beats and followed them only to
find a huge Hari Krishna thing going on in the street. We joined right in since
we just shaved our heads! I remember on duty at sea and Bird setting himself
onfire with Toluene by accident and somebody casually putting him out with a
fire extinguisher. I remember during refueling that "squirting" was
"bad". We squirted hundreds of gallons of fuel into the Chief's
berthing compartment. Not too bad til the ship leaned the other way and a wave
of deisel splashed across the entire compartment. Noooooooooo! We were picking
up floor tiles and wiping off the backside and setting them back in place.
Hehehe. I remember pulling port and starboard duty while in Thailand cuz we were
still steaming while the rest of the ship had 4 days off and went on tours and
such. Anyway, it would be nice to hear from some of the old gang. I saw two
names on here that I recognized from the Lab, I'll keep looking! I've been in
contact with Dennis Brickner off and on over the years. Oh, I'm a computer
network guy now, been doing it since 1985, 17 years. I have 4 kids (2 boys 2
girls), and 1 divorce. Ok, I set the record for the longest comment probably.
I'll drink a San Miguel for you, or at least a Tecate. - Lar

Comments: Served on "Top Gun" with VF-142 "Ghostriders"
as an Aviation Ordnanceman. We shared the ordnance shop with the guys from
VF-143 "Pukin Dogs". We argued with them once in awhile but generally
got along pretty well. Bought each other a few beers in Alongapo and Yokosuka.
You guys remember one of our Destroyer Escorts (U.S.S. Sproston) that called
themselves the "Pop Gun of the Seventh Fleet"? When we did unrep with
them they had a neat little sign showing a toy cork gun as I recall. I treasure
my cruise books. (Was on the Connie later) I took a bunch of old movies I shot
overseas and had them put on VHS tapes. I've got flight ops, drunken sailors
walking the streets of Alongapo, and a bunch of extremely drunken sailors at our
shop party at dungaree beach. I finish it up with Ranger sailing under the
Golden Gate Bridge at Frisco. I get it out once every ten years or so. In my
head I'm still only 19-20 years old!

Comments: thank you for putting these pictures and memory's together. I
recall when we where pulling into japan and they were using the Spads on deck to
turn the ship to dock her. I recall the Spads taking off and the canopies where
open. I recall when Ltjg Dingle came back aboard from being a prisoner, he was
so skinny and needed help to walk around on the deck. I feel like as Bob Hope
would say, Thank you for the memory's.

Did you serve aboard the USS Ranger,if so when?: 1968-70, as public
affairs officer & Lone Ranger No. 1.
Comments: I was the public affairs officer on the Ranger (I relieved Ltjg.
Mike Bardin) from sort of August 1968 to May 1970. It was I whom the XO, Cdr.
Graham ("Top Gun Eddie," we called him), first put aboard that white
fiberglass horse. As I recall it, my sidearms were gunmetal Navy-issue .38's,
not the more flashy weapons Capt. Duncan describes. Maybe that's all JO
reservists were allowed! When it was time for the show, I would mount the horse
on the inboard side of the island until the unrep ship broke away. At which
point, the tractor headed aft and went around the end of the island and out onto
the bomb farm, my guns blazing and the William Tell Overture playing. The oilers
thought they were the cat's meow when they unfurled major oil company flags at
the break-away. On one or two rides, the flight-deck tractor went close enough
to the starboard-side edge that I could practically see straight down into the
water. If heights had made me any dizzier, I'd have been Oscar; I was happy to
be relieved of that duty.

museum. There are several people working to that end including one of my old
Co's, Captain Hank Glindeman (later Rear Admiral). Also, one correction, my
second CO (after Glindeman) was Captain Alan (not Arthur!) E. Hill (nickname
Boot Hill). I know his name is Alan because as a junior officer, I had a few
fitness reports signed by Capt. Hill.

both on and off the flight deck. I also became a trusted "Shellback"
on that deployment as well. This cruise was in support of the American hostages
being held in Tehran, Iran for their 444 days in captivity. We had a jogging
campaign during this cruise dubbed "I ran to Iran" where participants
would log their laps ran on the flight deck over the nine month deployment. I
had logged over 500 miles that cruise! My second cruise was in 1982 and we did a
110 straight day line period in the Indian Ocean. We had two "beer
days" during that period. The reward was then a 12 day visit to Perth,
Australia where I celebrated my 22nd birthday in port! My friends tell me that I
had a good time, I don't recall many details from that port call!! I have many
fond memories from my nearly three years total time onboard including my dad
coming out for the "tiger cruise" in 1981. I still keep in touch with
a few of my great buddies from those days and everytime that I hear the William
Tell Overature, I have a secret desire to yell and scream while heading for the
brow!

Comments: Just discovered this site a few days ago. Also checked out some
other Navy vessel sites - none compare with either of the two Ranger sites I
have seen so far! If you got your overseas shots on board around 9/69, it was
probably me that did it. I logged in more than 15,000 immunizations that month.
(Maybe you didn't want to know.) My life is richer forever because of my time on
the Ranger CVA-61. Life is even richer now because of this website. Thanks!!!!

E-mail addess. I have had two request in the last week for pictures of the
famous F-4 that we had on Ranger back in the 60s. One was from Peter in New
Zealand. I sent him a slide last week. Last evening an individual names Michael
in Wisconsin E-mailed me concerning slides of the famous F-4s which VF-96 flew
from the great Carrier Ranger. I sent him a reply also. Really neat to hear from
individuals interested in the Great Warship Ranger and also inquires about the
planes that flew from her deck. Please note the new E-mail address. I do not
know how long the old MSN address will work. As always, great to hear from any

after hitting that Liberian Oil Tanker off Singapore in April. Anyway, If anyone

Although as young smartass back then I would have never believed it. I recently
lost my best friend on the Ranger, his name was Randy Berwick. We worked
together in 1MMR, he later transferred to the ACC shop and I to the Oil Lab.
There many of times some of the stunts we pulled could have landed us in jail or
the brig. How we got away with it was just pure luck. I had many good friends on
the Ranger and I think about them often. I think I speak for all former
Rangermen, you never lost that bond. This website and the one that Chuck Vore
created are the best. John Guy keep up the good work. Any shipmates that care to
chat about the Ranger, please feel free to contact me.

with EVERY Liberty port cnx'd. Lost a man overboard day one out of North Island.

Comments: Just wanted to check in and say thank you to John and Carol for
the amount of time and effort they've put into this site. They have brought
together so many shipmates and allowed us a place where we can share our stories
and display our Ranger collections. I am proud to have served in the same Navy
and on the same ship as someone like John Guy.
