Comments: Heartbreaking to see my proud old ship in mothballs. It's like
seeing a beloved relative in a nursing home. Westpac '89 was the best! Hawaii,
Philipines, Thailand, Hong Kong, Singapore, Freemantle/Perth. My uncle was on
the Ranger in 1959, and Don Garlits had a Navy recruiting picture shot on the
flight deck with one of his Dragsters. I also heard that portions of one of the
Star Trek movies was filmed on her. Fair weather and following seas to all

Comments: I really enjoyed being on the Ranger both times I was there. I
liked being able to be stationed there for the yard period in 84-85, in
Bremerton, and, of course all the good ports like Pusan, Perth, Sydney, Subic
Bay, Yokosuka, and even Dubai. The worst memory I have there is the day I first
came aboard the boat just two days after the multiple fatality fire in 83, to
find 3 Main, and the Personel Office passage way pretty much gutted.

went out on to the starboard "horn" to take a look at the bow after we
hit that tanker in 1979 on our way to the Indian Ocean. (That would have been my
third trip since 1971.) Yep. We sure bent that puppy over. Ding up quite a few
yards of catwalk to. We lost a good CO over that one. This black shoe fresh air
snipe wants to say thank you to the brown shoe flight deck type who lent me his
life vest before I went out there at 0 dark 30 to sneak that peek. I still can't
swim a stroke. Thanks brother.

Did you serve aboard the USS Ranger,if so when?: I was aboard from Oct
76-Oct 78
Comments: I joined the Ranger at NAS North Island in 76 just before she
was to go to Bremerton for overhaul. I remember the flight deck being loaded
with cars and trucks and the hangar bay was full of household goods for the
family of the crew members that were riding her up to Bremerton. We also had
quite a collection of dogs and cats on our trip up. I remember that the XO had
an old pick up truck that he had been trying to sell for quite some time but no
one wanted to by the junker. We hooked it up to the catapults and launched it
over the side on our way to Bremerton. I stayed with her through the yard period
and through workups after the yard. We got our first F-14 squadron on board in
early 78. I remember one night I was up in vultures row watching them take off
when an F14 experienced a cold cat shot. Just as the bird stared off the angle
deck, the pilot and RIO punched out but the plane kept going at full
afterburner. I thought it was going in the drink but it had a mind of its own.
It began to head straight up in a vertical climb until I couldn't see the
afterburners no more. About this time the air boss got on the horn and announced
that a crash was imminent and for all hands to clear the flight deck. The bird
had climbed vertical so far that it flamed out and started heading straight down
at the ship. I headed back into the island structure but didn't shut the hatch
all the way. I seen the Tomcat hit the water on our starboard side about 200
yards from amid ship and exploded because of the full load of fuel. I ended up
making a Westpac and meeting up with the USS Nimitz in 78 when Nimitz launched
the ill fated Irianian hostage rescue attempt. I was assigned to the Carrier
Intelligence Center (CVIC) as an Intellligence Specialist. I ended up staying in
the Navy for 21 years and retired as ISCS(AW/SW. I'm now a Las Vegas
Metropolitan Police Officer.

After Ranger I went to shore duty at NAS North Island working in AIMD/MTR until
I got transfreed to Nas Whidbey Island where I went on a Med Cruise aboard the
Uss Forrestal. I got out after 10 years for some crazy reason. I now work for

think I'm most grateful for the guys I served with. As weather men, there

Comments: I served on the RANGER in the "MARINE DETACHMENT", (MARDET),from
12/86-5/88. While on board Captain Davis was her CO & we were awarded the
"BATTLE E" ribbon. As a Marine this is a very rare & hard ribbon
to come by!! I am very proud to have had the opportunity to serve aboard a fine
Naval Vessel as the RANGER & with the SAILORS who made her the effecient
"WAR MACHINE" that she was!! (And to think I joined the Marine Corps
so I wouldn't be SHARK BAIT!!) I hope that the Marines & Sailors who served
aboard this Carrier all the best to them & their families.. Also, I just
recently bumped into PO1 Taylor.(Ray Taylor) If anyone is looking to contact him

Comments: I served aboard "Ranger" while assigned to VF-2
between 1984 and 1988. When the squadron boarded the ship, so did I. Although
the nomadic life I lead during those years wore thin, I do have a certain
nostalgia for this ship and am proud to have served aboard.

Comments: WHAT A GREAT SITE; LOTS OF MEMORIES CAME FLOODING IN. AS A
FORMER NAVY BRAT, I REMEMBER SEEING THE RANGER ALONG SIDE THE PIER IN ALAMEDA
(MUST HAVE BEEN ABOUT 1958) WHILE WAITING FOR THE CORAL SEA TO RETURN FROM
DEPLOYMENT. MY DAD SERVED WITH VF-154 ONBOARD RANGER (1967/68); THEN I HAD MY
TURN. "TOP GUN" BECAME SOMETHING OF A FAMILY TRADITION; I WAS SADDENED
BY THE ANNOUNCEMENT OF HER DECOMMISSIONING. BY THE WAY, NSA MEMPHIS STILL HAS
ONE OF THE TWO RVAH-7 RA-5C'S (FROM THE LAST "HEAVY" DEPLOYMENT) ON
STATIC DISPLAY - COMPLETE WITH RANGER MARKINGS. "USS RANGER" CONTINUES
TO STAND PROUD FOR ALL TO SEE.

Did you serve aboard the USS Ranger,if so when?: May 1991 to July 1993
Comments: I served in OA Division. I was promoted to Chief (AGC) in
September 1992 onboard the Ranger. My initiation was the last of the "old
style" Chief initiations. I helped decommission the ship, serving as a
final inspector for closing out shipboard spaces. I was also on the final cruise
the Ranger made. A WestPac from August 1, 1992 until January 26th 1993. We spent
two months in the Persian Gulf for Operation Southern Watch, then made an
emergency full speed run from the Gulf, to the coast of Somalia. We were the
first U.S. ship to arrive off of Somalia. Of the five WestPac's I made, this was
the best, with port stops in Pearl Harbor, Pusan, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Perth and
Sydney.

Comments: I have told the story many times on how I ended up on the
Ranger. It started with "Greetings Needs of the Navy" I was an AME2
with orders to ships company. That sucked. They didn't know what to do with me,
so they assigned me to IM4 Division fixing tow tractors, spotting dolleys and
any other type of yellow gear that broke or needed PM. This was not what I went
to A school for. In the end I enjoyed most of the experience. If anyone from
AIMD was on the '76 Cruise I would enjoy hearing from you.

Comments: I remember the cruise seemed to last forever! We were scheduled
to stop in so many exciting ports of call and I was really looking forward to
it. Friends of mine even extended their enlistments to make this cruise. But it
started bad and got worse. We lost a man overboard never to be seen again. We
crashed into our refueling ship, or maybe they crashed into us! We were diverted
to Central America for about a month, then on to the Indian Ocean and Persian
Gulf area following the bombing of the Marine barracks in Lebanon where we set a
record for the most continuous days at sea to date - 122. All ports of call were
cancelled! Beer days got to be routine. Then there was the fire in engine room
#4. Six men dead. I was so glad to finally get back to San Diego! But I would do
it all over again!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Comments: Did 2 westpac tours on this lady. She had a great crew and one
of the finest skippers I've ever had the pleasure of surving under, Capt. Tony
Less, now Ret.Admiral Less. Made a lot of great friends and was sorry to see her
go to the moth ball fleet. I will always have good memories of her.

in my life. The memories are wonderful and full of adventure. I thank all of you

those they served with. I remember the fun I had in PI, Australia, etc. The long

Did you serve aboard the USS Ranger,if so when?: 1963 thru 1967
Comments: My complements on a good site. Something you may want to add to
the history page. In the fall of 1963 the Ranger crossed the Equator off the
coast of Central America and we launched and recovered the U2 spy plane. This
was the first time it was ever launched or recovered from and Aircraft carrier.
Another moment was in 1966, Tonkin Gulf Yankee Station. Three boiler rooms on
fire dead in the water for four days, destroyer escourts fending off Russian
trawlers 100 ft from the Ranger. I cannot remember the DD at this time but she
came in between the trawler and the Ranger missing us by about fifty feet with
her guns trained in on the trawler just about cut her amidships. I was in V1
division from July 1963 thru January 1967, worked Fly 1,flight deck control, and
top side elevator opperator. I remember bieng on liberty in Yokuska Japan 1964
and being picked up by the Shore Patrol and brought back to the ship for
emergency deployment. The next thing we knew we were puting armor plate on the
spad's and loading live ammo. After two days steaming they tell us we are in the
Gulf of Tonkin of the coast of Vietnam, where the hell is that, and that two of
our destroyers have been fired upon. So much for that liberty. The rest is
history.

Did you serve aboard the USS Ranger,if so when?: yes 1967 =1968
Comments: Served '66 & '67. Reported to ship in Bremerton , Wash.
Took shakedown cruise to Vicktoria, B.C. Then to Alameda, Calif. to home port(
dependant, cars, boats, motorcycles everything we owned on board ). Then went to
San Diego, Calif. Then back to Alameda. Ship went to sea one day with a bunch of
politions on board so they could see Navy Sea Power at work. They put an old
Destroyer out there set at full GQ. Then all the different typs of Navy ships
and planes attacked it. It was something to see. A sub shot a topeado, Guide
misslil Cruser shot at it , destroyer shot at it Our plannes attacked it and we
even used our guns on it. I don't know how it stayed up so long. I will say I
did from then on take GQ real serious. Then off to Hawaii for the first stop on
way to WestPac. First stop Yokohama, Japan. Then Subic Bay, Phil. Then on and
off line periods.Had Bob Hope USO show aboard. Then we got called off the line
in Tonkin Gulf to go to the sea of Japan to try and do something about the USS
Pueblo. As you know we just sailed around and did nothing. Pulled into Sasebo,
Japan. Then back to Subic Bay. Later went to Hong Kong for ship R&R. Later
back to Good Old USA Have some stories if you want. Tom Barrett ( AK-2 USN when
I was in )

Comments: Iwas there for the collision on the 1979 deployment. I was up
on the forward port catwalk when we collided. I remember the smell of fuel and
fear of explosion, so I jumped up on the flightdeck and started running aft. I
ran so fast that I fell and 2 shipmates picked me up on the swoop as they also
ran aft without missing a step. I was ayoung sailor then and have lots of
memories of liberty and pulling pranks. She was a great ship. I hated the
William Tell overture they played as we went on liberty. Wow, Just all good
memories.

visiting the site for new info. By the way, Bremerton pix are the first I've
seen since I left Coronado - Kinda' sad to see her like that. Thanks again, I'll
stay in touch.

Comments: When I reported to RANGER I was but a slicl sleeve YN3. I had
spent the previous three years on shore duty in Hawaii. I joined RANGER and her
fine crew in March 1991, 20 hours after President Bush had declared that the
Persian Gulf War was over. RANGER remained on station for a month or so longer,
waiting for her rotation in the Gulf to be over. During the course of the next 2
and half years, I picked up second class, made another cruise and all the
inspections preparing for it and I learned from RANGER and her fine crew what it
ment to be a Sailor on one of the finest ships to sail the seven seas. Looking
back on RANGER, I realize just how great of a ship she really was. To me, she
will always be a great ship, and she will always have a special place in my
heart.

1979. I have read several of the comments on these sites and see nothing about
the ship running aground off the coast of San Diego, hitting a tanker in the
Indian Ocean and battling a Typhon along side the pier in the Philippines. I
guess these were things best forgot. Oh well, these three things led to three of
the five captains during my tour on board. Hope to hear from other electricians

cruises though. I supported the F-14 squadrons VF-1 and VF-2 if I remember
correctly. This was the only ship I was ever on but it holds some special
memories for me. Nothing like sleeping under a catapult. I think the most
memorable occasion though was when the CO woke up the Crew in the early morning
to say that President Bush had declared war and that we had already launched our
first strike agaist Iraq. Good luck with your website. ex AQ/AT Richard Wilkins

sent a photo of the UIM tag/patch for the ship I was on. When Ken saw it he gave

only one UIM but think I have a couple more. If I can find an extra one would be
happy to send it to you. I am not 100% sure I have more will look through my
stuff. The ship I was on was the USS Walton DE-361 and I was a RM2 and later
made RM1 while I was still aboard and over in WESTPAC. I was a RMC when I got
out, but did not retire out of the Navy. Again, nice looking web site. Regards,

even more. The look on the faces of the crew on the other ships during unrep
when she came out were something else. I'm not sure what the nude mannikins real

Comments: It's nice to finally find a site that is dedicated solely to
the Ranger! Right out of AMS 'A' School, I was assigned to Helicopter
Anti-Submarine Squadron 14, which deployed on the Ranger. I'll never forget the
first time I layed my eyes upon her. After checking into the squadron, I asked a
fellow shipmate to take me to this ship that our airwing was attached to. I must
admit I was awe struck the minute I stepped onboard for the first time. It was
only a year later when we pulled out of North Island for my most memorable trip,
WESTPAC 92, the Rangers Final Cruise. It was a fansastic cruise, and one which I
will never forget (especially Perth & Sydney, Australia). It was almost
criminal the Navy deciding to decommision her. Especially considering our
replacement...the USS Constellation, or USS Constipation as we were so fond of
calling her. What a wreck she was! Anyways, keep up the great work on the site!

Comments: Came aboard the Ranger right out of Boot Camp, got aride from
down town San Franciso from a chief in a pick-up truck, he recued myself and two
other "boots" from some of Frisco's friendlious people at a bus stop.
arriving at the peir he pointed out a large gray warehouse with trucks driving
on and off and said, "thats your ship"! what a let down, it did not
resemble the picture in my blue jackets manual. Dirty, hoses and cable strung
about, in and out, adn the terrible noise of the chippers and grinders. I was
reporting aboard while she was in the yards in Hunters Point. In due course I
was assigned to Engineering as a yeoman for R-Div. which in did for about 9
months until I convinced Master Chief Shields that I had no desire to be a
yeoman, I was going to be a Shipfitter, so off to R-3 I went and for the next
three years I worked with some of the finest shipmates a sailor could have as I
learnt how to be a shipfitter-metal, working up to 2nd class before transfering
to the USS Sylvania out of Naples, Italy. I have many fond memeries of The
Ranger, my first ship of many in my 30 years in the Navy and it all started with
her. She recovered from the yards and was turned into the cleanest ship I ever
served on! She has another meaning for me also as she was my sons first ship
also, him serving aboard in VA-145 squdron in the late '80s. I retired a few
years back out of La Maddelana, Italy off the USS Simon Lake AS-33 as a HTCM
(SW). Glad I found your site. keep up the good work, one other request, does
anyone have a Maltese Cross for Blues? I lost my old set of blues that it was on
and am looking for one for my shadow box. thaks again.

Comments: I serve on the USS Ranger for training purposes. A group of us
came over from the Philly shipyard for the USS Independance CV-62 to get some
operational training. I could be wrong about the months (give or take one or
two). I enjoyed it it was my first crews. For those who visit my webpage....I'm
still working on it. Learning html is a slow process. Thank you.

Comments: It still is great to visit this site and scroll thru all the
names of people who served on this great ship. The Ranger has a rich and
memorable history that I will cherish for ever. The moments I spent on the
Ranger were not always the best of times, but I look back at that time and
realize I am the person I am today because of her. I wish every Rangerman that
served on her the best in life and may "God Bless Us All".

Did you serve aboard the USS Ranger,if so when?: 1961-1964
Comments: I was assigned to the Ranger, out of Boot camp.went to the
Commissary Div. and served there till July of 1964. was honorably discharged,
then reenlisted for another tour on the Pitkin Cty. LST. I have many fond
memory's of the ranger, her crew and my friends. I would love to reconstruct
those memory's. When leaving the Ranger I was a CS-3, which i remained through
out my enlistments and 2nd honorable discharge in 1965.
