I served on the Ranger (65-66). As I look back, these were some of the best years of my life. I was very proud of what we did in the Tonkin Gulf. I was in a squadron (VF143) and worked on F-4 Phantoms. We made stopovers in Hawaii, Yokusaka, and Subic. If you served with me, please write. Mike Price Chambersburg PA

Did you serve aboard the USS Ranger, if so when? Yes; 1977-1979
What Division or Squadron were you in? VF-21 AMH-2
Comments:
A long story made as short as possible. I had been in the USAF for 7 years, got out due to a new (civilian job) and got laid off 2 wks after gettin' out. Couldn't get back in the AF for 6 mo. or more. I had a friend (USN recuriter & really, a friend). He was able to get me in the Navy at my former rank E-5 2 wks later. I went to NTC Great Lakes for 6 wks indoc. then on to sunny San Diego and VF-21. The Ranger was still in Bremerton and not due back to SD for a year. I was at Miramar NAS where I got aquanted with the "fightin' navy". I was assigned to the Hydraulic shop until I got out in 1979. I had a very interesting time in SD, actually we fell in love with it but not the Navy. I have only a few photos from my short time on the Ranger. I wished I had taken more. I was only on board for a total of 30 days but learned to appreciate what the entire crew did in making the Ranger float. The (VF-21) skipper had planned on making me a troubleshooter top side since that is what I was in the AF. I wear glasses and could not find goggles that would fit and seal over my glasses making my eyes water a bit too much. After the first day I could hardly see. I ended up working on the acft in the hanger bay. Just before the West Pac cruise the skipper called me into his office and offered me E-6 if I would re-enlist and become his permanent ASDO. The deal was I would go on the cruise for a year and then go to Warrent Officer School and come back to VF-21 and become a Maintenance Officer. It was a tempting offer but I declined due to an offer from a Kansas Air Guard unit. I went on to become a Air Training Command Instructor on KC-135's, F-4's & F-15's until my retirement in 1990. I went on to work at NorthropGrumman on the B-2 project then became a Special Ed Teacher in Kansas where I still am.

I was privilaged to serve aboard the USS Ranger with my Marine A-6 squadron. I was part of the Hydraulic/Metal workcenter and also did a little time as a cookie-cop with S-2M on the mess decks. Great experience, wouldn't trade it for the world. I wonder when I will get the chance to go aboard her again.

Many fond memories of serving on Ranger. Bi-Centennial Cruise was best time of my Navy experience. Shellback initiation was horrible - took hours to remove the grease - but was well worth it. I really appreciated the escalator to the O3 level when carrying the huge HF radio tuner from below deck stores to the Catwalk (even if they worked some of the time.)

Can remember weighing in at 204 pounds shen I joined the crew of the Ranger. After 30 days in the number 4 machinery room (Boiler front was my duty station)I had reached goal, 165 lbs and it never changed, reguardless of how much food I ate. Promised I would not let my division officer know how I was able to get off the ship at the end of the first year. Went from the Ranger to USNMCB-4 in Chu Lai, Vietnam, for another eleven months. Finished off my enlistment in DaNang, Vietnam for another eleven months. God bless each one of you, He certainly has blessed me.
