I am now proud to serve at the VA clinic in Bemidji, MN where so many deserving and veterans of all this nations services live - just the same as all the places I have been fortunate to experience. After over 20 years of medicine and more than half of that in the Air Force, including flight medicine, I have a special place for all air crew members and flight ops. I recently reconnected with Jack Johansen of the USS Ranger, my dad's cousin, and he was kind enough to send me pictures of the USS Ranger and his time on board form 65-67 earning five battle stars flying the A1E. Just like any vet I can understand only a fraction of his sacrifice but he said something that really struck me. "I would gladdly give up my life for you" he said to a superior when defending an order he gave to protect his men in a gail. I guess that is the same gail that comes to all of our lives at one point or another. He is "proudest of the lives that I have saved" and that is why on his birthday,Nov. 11 - Veterans Day - that I put his poster up behind my examination table so that I can look at such honor and live up to it with every veteran on every day.
