My brother Bob Miller was on the Ranger for its first cruise in 1957 he was also honored to be invited on its last ride. There was a big article in the SanDiego Union Tribune on Monday 3/15/1993 about the last trip and my brother. I also served on the Ranger in 1972-74. Bob died from cancer a few weeks ago. I had some ranger memorabilia along with the news paper article. He had a military funeral service, it was perfect, his ranger hat went with him on his final trip. I still wear mine proudly.

Although I never served on the Ranger, the Captain of the Ranger from May 1961 to May 1962, Captain William Leonard, was from my hometown of Douglas, Arizona. I served on the USS Kawishiwi AO-146 as a Radarman from 1960-1962. I also believe a couple of my hometown buddies served on the Ranger around that time, but cannot verify it, since I have not contaced them. If you have cruise books for 1960-1962, would you see if you have both Tony Gomez and Robert Jordan listed as crew members?

This was my first cruise and first time on a carrier. I remember coming aboard and walking into the hangar, looking around and thinking my god is this thing huge! As I came up the brow and saluted the ensign I knocked my glasses off and watched as they dropped into the water. My spare pair was buried deep in the bowels of my seabag, so my first impression of Ranger was a blurry one, but I was so impressed. Of course I did as everyone does their first time out--I got lost more times than I can count (ending up on blue tile more than once!), found out the hard way why kneeknockers are called that and was awestruck at the perfectly choreographed chaos that is flight ops. I also remember one morning sitting between the tails of one of our birds parked on the fantail watching the sun make its grand entrance into the day. My father had told me what a perfect sunrise at sea was like, and I wished he could be there with me to see it. Thanks

Please if you can help me in finding the name of the shipmate who was killed when the CAT officer shot an F-4 B off the flight deck hitting and killing this shipmate. He was in ships company on the catapult crew either in 1965 or 1966. The USS Ranger was the best ship I was ever on, we had great men to serve with. Richard
