I am very proud to have served on the USS Ranger, I remember riding her in dead tow from San Diego to Long Beach, their were about five of us from the last crew to serve to ride on her on the move, I remember going down to the hanger bay to take some readings on watch, it was weird because it was pitch black and you could just hear the ship creaking.

This was a great time in my life, although I didn't know it at the time. The ship was in dry dock in Bremerton when I checked aboard. I remember the shake down cruise after the yard period. I didn't know a ship that big could go so fast and turn so sharp and so quick. I remember when the USS Pueblo was captured in 68' by the North Koreans. What an experience, man was it cold! I never saw so many ships in formation, and some of them were Russian. At that time, I wasn't sure I'd ever see home again. We took on nuclear weapons on the way there from Yankee Station. I would like to get ahold of some of my old shipmates. I hope they're all doing good!

I worked in 4 AUX for most all my time aboard, And did a stint as water king in the engineering control room.I saw us collide with the uss wichatal while refueling. Donned an OBA and went down below during the fire in the indian ocean. Got all messy during wog day. Spent 121 days at sea. Saw the cheerleaders. There were bad times and there were good times and I would do it all over again!!. Hopefully there are some of my friends out there that will get in touch with me.

Great web-site. I served on the Security Group Detachment on a number of carriers from 1079-2970. I was on the Ranger for several months in the spring of 1970. None of the ships got underway or completed un-reps with as much flair as the Ranger. I think of Ranger and the people I knew back then every time I hear the William Tell Overture.

What a great site. I am glad you sent this along. I have not thought much about my days on the Ranger until now. How refreshing to go back to those days. I have a lot of stories to tell. I don't see any familiar faces in the pics...but then again, there were a LOT of people that served on her. I now live in Port Angeles, Washington. I have owned and operated my own business since 1985. Jackson's Signs and Art Studio. We do custom signs and art. If anyone remembers me and would like to e-mail me, feel free. I am always happy to stay in touch and catch up on old times.

Comments:
I was an AMS2 assigned to the VA-93 Airframes Shop. I had been sent to Douglas Aircraft Company prior to boarding the Ranger to learn how to install new Ejection Seats in the A-4 Aircraft. My Commanding Officer sent me to Opama, Japan to teach the Japanese how to install the new Ejection Seats when the Ranger 1st pulled into Japan. I remained at Opama, Japan for the complete cruise. It was wonderful duty and I learned so much about Aircraft Assembly during my months at Opama, Japan with NIPPI Aircraft Company. When we arrived back at our Home base of Alameda, California orders were waiting for me back to Japan. I was assigned to Osaka, Japan where we opened Shin Meiwa Aircraft Company which overhauled Military Aircraft for USA. I spent four years in Shin Meiwa. I retired from the Navy in 1974 as a AMCS after 18 years of interesting assignments with the Navy. Went to work for Boeing Aircraft in Wichita, Kansas where I worked for 21 interesting years. During my years with Boeing I was sent back to Japan to help start some production work on the Boeing 767 at Shin Meiwa Aircraft Company in Osaka, Japan. Shin Meiwa Aircraft Company was so important in my life its where I met my Wife and learned so much about Manufacture. I only wish I had a chance to thank CDR Gendron for trusting me enough for sending a young 21 year old sailor to Japan to teach the Japanese how to install ejection seats in the A-4 Aircraft. If any Blue Blazers happen upon this site please contact me.
